Police bust gambling den in Kalyanpur; arrest eight

Kanpur: In a joint action, Kalyanpur police and Crime Branch busted a gambling den being operated in a locked house in Nankari area under Kalyanpur police station limits of the city on Saturday evening. Police arrested eight people and seized cash worth Rs 3.83 lakh, playing card decks and several vehicles found at the site.Police have launched an investigation after registering a case against all the accused under the Gambling Act.Crime Branch said that it received information about a large gambling den being operated in a locked house belonging to Goyal Kumar Gautam in Nankari area. People from various parts of the city used to visit the den and place bets worth lakhs of rupees. After confirming the information, Crime Branch and Kalyanpur police jointly planned an action.Late on Saturday evening, the police team raided the house. Seeing the police, the accused tried to escape but the police team cordoned off the area and apprehended all the accused.During the search, police seized playing card decks and cash worth Rs 3,83,000 cash being used in gambling. Police also seized two cars, one bike and one scooter found at the spot, and said they were investigating the recovered vehicles.The accused were being interrogated to find out about the other members connected with the gambling network and since when it was being operated.Acting station house officer Rais Ahmad stated that eight people were arrested in the action taken on the basis of an information. Cash, playing card decks and vehicles were seized from the possession of the accused. Cases have been registered against all under the relevant sections and action is being taken.
