Ciza Thomas takes charge as Sanskrit University VC

Kochi: Ciza Thomas on Friday assumed charge as the vice-chancellor (VC) of Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit (SSUS) at the university's main campus in Kalady. Thomas, who is also VC of APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University, was given additional charge by governor Rajendra Arlekar.
Thomas was appointed following the removal of K K Geethakumari as VC on Thursday, after controversies including the university syndicate's decision to grant a BFA degree to a student who earlier failed the exam and was later admitted to an MFA programme. Addressing reporters after taking charge at the administrative block, Thomas said the university would introduce new projects and academic programmes that combine traditional knowledge with modern disciplines. She added that efforts would be made to launch new generation courses while preserving the unique character of Sanskrit studies, with the aim of attracting students from across India and abroad. "We will encourage studies that connect the traditional knowledge embedded in Sanskrit with modern science and technology. The academic standards of the university will be strengthened so that internationally relevant research projects and courses can be introduced," she said. Thomas said it was a privilege to assume office as the VC of a university named after Adi Shankaracharya at his birthplace, Kalady. She noted that Shankaracharya established four mutts across India to propagate his philosophical ideas. "These mutts can be seen as early forms of universities. The idea of developing knowledge, establishing centres of learning to disseminate it, and appointing responsible heads for them reflects a structured educational vision that even today's academic institutions strive to achieve," Thomas said. She also said the serious financial crisis faced by the university would be examined and that the govt's assistance would be sought to address the issue. The matter would be discussed with higher education minister R Bindu, who is scheduled to visit the university on Saturday.
