KOLKATA: Covid vaccination in Bengal, which had been happening at a snail's pace for several weeks as elsewhere in the country, jumped almost three-fold on Saturday.

Coronavirus Live UpdatesThe current surge in some countries, especially China, and health experts' advice on completing vaccination have made people come back to CVCs. Sources in the health department said the rise in vaccination footfall so far is mostly seen in private CVCs.
Before Saturday, Bengal had been administering around 1,000 doses daily for more than a month while the number dipped to three-digit figures occasionally.
With 3,088 doses dispensed on Saturday, the state recorded highest Covid-19 inoculation in about seven weeks. The number of recipients is expected to go up in the days to come.
"While most of the people are taking the booster jabs, there are some who who had stayed away from taking the second dose, despite being already eligible. They are returning to complete their vaccination," said a senior health department official.
Many private CVCs have decided to reopen their vaccination services and some have requisitioned fresh stock of the jab. Government CVCs are also anticipating a rise in demand but unlike private CVCs that can procure vials directly from manufacturers, the state has to depend on the health ministry supply.
"We have only Covaxin as we have no Covishield or Corbevax doses in our vaccine depot. We may have to raise a requisition in case people start flocking government CVCs. We are waiting for the GOI policy on this," said Ashim Das Malakar, state family welfare officer.
