Subham was killed within an hour of his abduction. The abductors had planned to kill him first and then wrangle over ransom, the police said.
KOLKATA: Five-year-old Subham was playing outside his two-storey Behala home on Saturday morning with doting grandpa Lagdeo Singh keeping a watch from the first floor. Lagdeo relaxed his watch around noon to use the bathroom. Just 15 minutes later Subham's mother Sobha came looking for her son. He was nowhere to be seen.A frantic search in the neighbourhood yielded no result.
The family's worst fears came true when the kid's grandmother found a ransom note in the study. Subham had been kidnapped. The search continued all night. Top police officials rushed to the spot as tension mounted. Rapid Action Force personnel were deployed as daybreak neared.
At 6 am, little Subham's body surfaced in a pond, barely metres from his home. It bore marks of strangulation. Prima facie, police said, the child had choked to death due to excessive use of chloroform. It was a chilling repeat of last December's abduction-murder of five-year-old Rwik Nath that had led a Behala mob to burn a woman to death. This time the police were quick to defuse the tension. They first detained Inderdeo Singh (Lagdeo's brother, who lives next door), his sons Umesh and Dinesh and Subham's tutor Manoj Prasad.
Later, all four were arrested when their involvement became apparent. The ransom note in the study and a possible meeting point near the family garage to collect the money made the police sure of two things — the abductors were amateurs and close to the family. Inderdeo, the police said, was jealous of Lagdeo. He felt Lagdeo had denied him his due. Besides, Lagdeo and his son Rajesh had a thriving business while Inderdeo and his sons slogged to break even. The families had several public spats over property. According to local CPM leader Debu Bose, Inderdeo had publicly threatened Lagdeo in the past. The police said Inderdeo roped in Manoj after he hatched the plan. Manoj used his proximity to the family to first lure Subham away and then plant the ransom note. Subham was killed within an hour of his abduction. The abductors had planned to kill him first and then wrangle over ransom, the police said.
