West Bengal Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 Highligts: TMC retains dominance in West Bengal; wins 29 seats

Minority community voters significantly impacted the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal. Their support helped the Trinamool Congress (TMC) dominate Muslim-majority areas in the southern region, while the division of minority votes between the Left-Congress alliance and the TMC facilitated BJP's victories in the northern part. With minority voters constituting about 30% of the electorate, their influence spans 16-18 key seats. Notable constituencies with substantial Muslim populations include Raiganj, Cooch Behar, Balurghat, Malda North, Murshidabad, and Howrah. The BJP retained Balurghat, Raiganj, and Malda North by capitalizing on the divided minority votes.

The decision to shift Dilip Ghosh from the Midnapore constituency to Burdwan-Durgapur proved costly for the BJP, which lost both the Lok Sabha seats. Ghosh lost to Trinamool’s Kirti Azad by a margin of 1,37,981 votes, his first electoral defeat since his career transition from an organizational role with the RSS to electoral politics.

“I worked hard, yet was defeated. In politics and in life, ups and downs are part of the game. Look at Mamata Banerjee, where she was and where she is now,” said Ghosh after the results on Tuesday.

Before entering the counting centre in the morning, he had acknowledged the difficulty of the contest. “Winning an election is much tougher than winning a Cricket World Cup. People accepted me when I came here. I hope they continue to accept me,” Ghosh said.

Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency, which includes Sandeshkhali, handed over a decisive mandate to TMC with its candidate Haji Nurul Islam trouncing BJP’s Rekha Patra by a margin of over 3.3 lakh votes. Trinamool not only retained Basirhat but maintained its lead in Sandeshkhali assembly segment, which is a part of the Lok Sabha constituency. All trouble spots in Sandeshkhali also voted in Trinamool’s favour

In West Bengal, chief minister Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress put up a strong show and won 29 seats. The BJP, which won 18 seats in 2019, is slated to win 12 seats and Congress has won one seat.

The Congress managed to slightly reduce BJP's domination in Gujarat, home state of PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. While the BJP won 25 seats, the Congress won one seat. The BJP had earlier won Surat Lok Sabha seat unopposed.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) continued its stronghold in West Bengal, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee steering her party to a decisive triumph. The BJP's ambition of capturing 35 seats was thwarted as they barely managed to secure a double-digit tally. As of 9 pm, the TMC had won 17 seats and was leading in 12 out of the 42 Lok Sabha constituencies, while the BJP had won three seats and was leading in nine, according to the Election Commission website. The Congress managed to secure only one seat.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) appears to be on the verge of failing to open its account in the state, mirroring its performance in the 2019 elections.
As the TMC's leads solidify into victories, the party is poised to achieve its second-best performance in West Bengal, following its impressive showing in the 2014 elections when it won 34 seats. The TMC garnered 46 per cent of the votes, an increase from the 43 per cent it secured in 2019.

The CPI(M)-led Left Front seems to be facing a repeat of their 2019 performance in the current Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal. The party is unlikely to secure any seats in the state, despite the earlier confidence expressed by CPI(M)'s state general secretary and politburo member Mohammed Salim, who himself failed to win from the Murshidabad constituency.

This follows the Left Front's dismal performance in the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections, where they failed to win a single seat.
As the results continue to pour in, the CPI(M)-led Front has not managed to secure the second position in 19 out of the declared seats, with the exception of Murshidabad. Moreover, in the remaining 23 seats where counting is still underway, the Front is not among the top two contenders.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) emerged victorious in five Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal on Tuesday, as per the Election Commission's announcement. In the Barrackpore constituency, Partha Bhowmick, a TMC candidate and state minister, secured 5,20,231 votes, defeating the incumbent BJP MP Arjun Singh, who received 4,55,793 votes, by a margin of 64,438 votes.

Asit Kumar Mal, the sitting TMC MP, successfully defended his Bolpur seat, garnering 8,55,633 votes and defeating BJP's Piya Saha, who obtained 5,28,380 votes, by a substantial margin of 3,27,253 votes.

The Jangipur seat witnessed TMC MP Khalilur Rahaman's victory over Congress candidate Murtoja Hossain Bokul. Rahaman secured 5,44,427 votes, while Bokul received 4,27,790 votes, resulting in a margin of 1,16,637 votes in favor of the TMC.

In the constituency of Raiganj, Kartick Chandra Paul of the BJP emerged as the victor in the lok sabha election. Paul garnered a total of 5,60,897 votes, securing a significant lead of 68,197 votes over his closest opponent, Krishna Kalyani of the TMC, who received 4,92,700 votes. Ali Imran Ramz finished in third place with 2,63,273 votes. It was formerly represented by BJP's Debasree Chaudhuri, who secured 40.08% of votes in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections with a margin of 511,652 votes by defeating Kanaia Lal Agarwal of AITC

Partha Bhowmick secures victory in Barrackpur Lok Sabha election, defeating BJP Arjun Singh by a substantial margin of 64438 votes. Arjun Singh secured 42.82% of votes in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections with a margin of 472,994 votes by defeating Dinesh Trivedi of the TMC, who secured the position of first runner-up with a total of 458,137 votes, representing 41.48% of the vote share

In West Bengal, several Trinamool Congress candidates who have been contesting for multiple terms appeared to be on the verge of victory from their respective constituencies on Tuesday, maintaining substantial leads over their closest competitors, according to election officials. Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, the TMC candidate who has been winning the Barasat Lok Sabha seat since 2009, emerged triumphant once again, securing a margin of 1,14,189 votes against her BJP rival, Swapan Majumder, who received 5,77,821 votes.

Sougata Roy, a seasoned TMC leader who has been representing the party from Dum Dum since 2009, had garnered 63,874 more votes than BJP candidate Silbhadra Datta as of 8.16 pm. Roy secured 4,76,361 votes, while Datta obtained 4,11,373 votes.
Sudip Bandopadhyay, the TMC candidate contesting from the Kolkata North seat since 2009, was also ahead by more than 79,000 votes against his closest rival, Tapas Roy of the BJP. Bandopadhyay had polled 4,33,143 votes, with counting still ongoing, according to the officials.

In a press conference on Tuesday, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee called for the immediate resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, citing his campaign claims of the BJP securing over 400 seats in the Lok Sabha polls, which failed to materialize as the party couldn't achieve a majority on its own. Banerjee declared this as a "moral defeat" for the Prime Minister.


The chief minister expressed her determination to remove Modi from power at the Centre and ensure the "INDIA bloc" takes charge. She criticized the Prime Minister for breaking many parties and stated that the people have now broken his morale. Banerjee further claimed that Modi is now seeking support from TDP and Nitish Kumar to form the government.

Banerjee asserted that the misuse of central agencies and atrocities have been defeated in this election. She vowed that the BJP, which previously intimidated her party and others using central agencies and their two-thirds majority in Parliament, will not be spared. She emphasized that neither her party nor the other parties of the INDIA bloc will forgive the BJP for their actions.

However, the current trend suggests that their efforts may not yield the desired results.
Salim, a seasoned politician who has previously served as a Lok Sabha MP from the now-defunct Kolkata North-East constituency in 2004 and later from Raiganj in 2014, has refuted claims that his decision to contest from Murshidabad was influenced by the fact that it is a Muslim-majority constituency.

In the Tamluk constituency, Abhijit Gangopadhyay, the BJP candidate, has taken a significant lead over his closest competitor, Debangshu Bhattacharya from the Trinamool Congress, with a margin of 59,570 votes, as reported by Election Commission officials. Gangopadhyay, who entered politics by joining the BJP immediately after stepping down from his position as a judge at the Calcutta High Court, has been at the center of political discussions due to his judgments on various matters related to education in the state.

With Chowdhury's likely defeat in the Baharampur parliamentary constituency, which was considered one of the last remaining Congress bastions in the state, the Trinamool Congress would, for the first time, have its flag planted and waving in the region.
Chowdhury, who has been an MP from Baharampur since 1999 and currently serves as the West Bengal Pradesh Congress president, faced perhaps his most formidable electoral challenge in the form of Pathan, the TMC candidate who does not reside in the area.

According to Election Commission data the Trinamool Congress is poised for a substantial victory in the jute belt constituencies of West Bengal. The party's candidates are expected to secure wins in six seats, including three that are currently represented by the BJP, indicating a possible change in voter preferences towards the TMC.

"Cooch Behar, Barrackpore and Howrah" are among the three constituencies where the TMC is likely to wrest control from the BJP. In Coochbehar, "TMC candidate Jagadish Basunia is leading by a margin of 2,633 votes over his nearest rival, BJP nominee and union minister Nisith Pramanaik."

The TMC's Rachana Banerjee is also maintaining a comfortable lead of 33,047 votes in Hooghly, putting her ahead of the sitting BJP MP, Locket Chatterjee. This substantial margin further underscores the TMC's strong performance in the region.
