Kannur: Thalassery sessions court on Thursday granted bail to five KSU members who were arrested on charges of allegedly attacking health minister Veena George at Kannur railway station on Feb 25. Sessions judge K T Nisar Ahammed observed that there was no evidence to prove that the accused were carrying any weapons during the incident.
KSU Kannur district president Athul M C, members Akshay V V, Bithul Balan, Ahammed Yasin and H Mubas were arrested while protesting against the minister over alleged medical negligence incidents in the state.
The judge said that police took the men into custody from the crime spot, however the investigation team could not recover any weapon from there.
The KSU members were charged under various sections, including murder attempt.
According to the prosecution, the accused had assembled unlawfully and trespassed on to the railway station platform and attempted to kill the minister. However, the court noted that the accused were only carrying black flags. The minister's wound report also shows that no weapon was used.
The court ordered the release of the five men on bail on executing a bond of Rs 50,000 with two solvent securities. The accused were instructed to appear before the investigation officer every Monday between 9am and 10am. They were also warned not to influence the witnesses or tamper with evidence.
