Sanitation workers backbone of localbodies, deserve better deal, says CM Yogi

Lucknow: Lauding the efforts of the sanitation workers, chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday hinted that the daily emoluments being offered to them will soon be hiked.Stressing on the need to improve their living standards, the CM described the sanitation workers as the backbone of the local bodies in keeping the cities clean.He said that a committee to review the daily emoluments offered to sanitation workers has been constituted. The chief secretary will preside over the committee.The government is also contemplating to set up a state level board to ensure that proper remuneration is provided to the workers who start toiling on the streets early in the morning to ensure that streets and roads are cleaned.Yogi pointed out that the local bodies had been making payments to the agencies that have been roped in to keep the streets clean. However, some of the agencies are not passing on the due benefits to the workers and have been profiteering at their cost. The committee is going to come up with its suggestions to ensure that due benefits reach the ground workers.“And if required a state-wide board which will have the power and authority to dispose of the complaints of workers against their employer will be constituted,” added a senior officer from the urban development department. Majority of the local bodies have outsourced the sanitation and cleanliness work to private agencies and manpower suppliers.
