Football field to police beat, ADCP Gurmeet set for another city stint
Ludhiana: Absorbed in the Punjab police force in 2001, Gurmeet Kaur who gave 14 long years to sports and excelled in football at both national and international levels has recently joined the Ludhiana police commissionerate as the additional deputy commissioner of police headquarters. She said she is all set to serve the society and do welfare work for the police force in her capacity as the ADCP. After having made waves in the world of sports by playing several international tournaments and games, Gurmeet joined the Punjab police as an inspector on sports quota around 22 years back.The ADCP has been honoured with the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Award, besides Kiran Bedi award and Rani Di Jhansi award for her bravery and services to the society.ADCP Gurmeet told TOI that she started playing football in school and won her first medal ever when she was in Class VII. She also excelled in national school games. Further, in college, she played national inter- university tournaments and owing to her prowess, led the Punjab team as captain in nationals at least seven times. Sharing her international achievements, the ADCP said she went to Germany in 1997 for a football tournament and played the Asian championship in 1997, 1999, 2002 and in Asian games in 1999.
Gurmeet Kaur said, “I was the first woman SHO in Ludhiana city in 2002- 2003. I was posted at the division number 2 police station here. Later, in 2012 I served as ACP in Ludhiana and now, I am back as the ADCP- headquarters.”“My focus will be on doing welfare work for the police force as they work diligently for the society day in and day out. Besides, once the elections are over, we may plan some initiatives for women and children of the society,” she added.
