Madurai: An advocate made a mention before the
Madras high court on Monday seeking to initiate suo motu cognisance pertaining to the major blast reported in a fireworks unit in Kattanarpatti village in Virudhunagar district on April 19, Sunday, which claimed the lives of 25 people.
A division bench of justice N Sathish Kumar and justice M Jothiraman sought a response from the state and posted the pending matter for hearing on Tuesday.
On Monday, advocate R Karunanidhi stated that a similar matter was pending before the court. He also said that an appeal in connection with payment of compensation in an earlier case of similar nature was also pending.
In his representation to the registrar judicial of Madurai bench, Karunanidhi said that, as per news reports, the unit was operating on a Sunday (holiday) without permission and safety norms were violated. He said the recurring disasters in Virudhunagar district demonstrate systematic failure.
