Madurai: An election awareness programme, titled "My Vote Is Not for Sale," and a human chain with the participation of around 2,500 integrated child development scheme workers was held in Madurai district on Thursday, to emphasise on 100% voter turnout.
The awareness programme was held at Tamukkam grounds and was decorated with fruits, vegetables and flowers by the horticulture department. A human chain awareness programme was also inaugurated at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose flyover in Goripalayam. Participants in the human chain created awareness among the public using slogans such as "We Will Vote 100%," "My Vote Is Not for Sale," and "Voting Is Our Duty."
Speaking at the event, district election officer K J Praveen Kumar said "It is essential that all voters participate without fail in the polling and ensure 100% voter turnout. Furthermore, various campaigns are being carried out in educational institutions, self-help groups, and places where the public gathers in large numbers. In particular, special camps have been conducted for differently abled persons, senior citizens and young voters, and the district administration is working with full dedication to ensure a fair election.
"
In Tuticorin, district election officer and district collector Vishu Mahajan urged salt pan workers to ensure 100% voter turnout at a programme held at Sahayamatha Salt Company in Veppalodai under the Vilathikulam assembly constituency.
Addressing the gathering, he said, "Each vote may seem small. But when everyone votes, that is what will transform our democracy. Especially, senior citizens, women, persons with disabilities — no one should be left out, and everyone must vote. You must meet your polling booth officials. Ensure that your name is on the voters list, carry your voter ID card, and go to your polling booth to vote in the election to be held on April 23. My appeal is to achieve the highest voter turnout and bring our district to the first position at the state level."
Subsequently, the salt pan workers formed a human chain holding awareness banners to highlight the importance of voting.
The collector presented appreciation certificates to the individuals who drew colourful awareness paintings with salt.
