PTR Nagar’s sewage woes overflowing for four years
Madurai: The roads in PTR Nagar near Bibi Kulam in the city are a perennial nightmare for residents as they are inundated by overflowing sewage water posing health hazard to them. A weak pipeline carrying sewage water from K Pudur to Sellur pumping station is being blamed for this state of affairs. Residents say whenever the matter is taken up with corporation officials, only temporary measures are taken while they have been demanding a permanent solution for long.

E. ilango, a resident, “Every time we raise the issue with the officials concerned, workers come and remove the blockade. But the real problem is the pipeline. The weak pipeline should be replaced to end the menace.” Residents complain that they have been grappling with the issue for the last four years. The problem got worse in the ongoing rainy season since rain water mixed with the sewage water. As a result, the water ran along the road for several metres providing perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Students of Pandian Nedunchezhian corporation school point out that they suffer the most as the water inundates the school entrance too. “Students have to do a bit of circus while crossing to reach their classes without getting their uniforms spoiled. It also poses health hazard to as many as 500 students studying on the campus,” said A Muthu, a resident. When contacted, an official of Madurai corporation said that they kept attending to the problem whenever there was a complaint. Soon, the issue would be sorted out permanently, he claimed.
