MADURAI: Former BJP leader K Annamalai’s ‘We the Leaders’ movement has planned to start physical enrolment of members, with a particular focus on rural areas.Former state and district level functionaries of BJP who joined Annamalai held a meeting in Madurai on Wednesday to discuss ways and means to expand the movement. “We are planning to deploy volunteers in villages, set up temporary help centres and assist residents who wish to register as members,” said former BJP state executive committee member Palani Kanagaraj who participated in the meeting. The rural outreach was planned as they found many in villages did not have android phones or online literacy to access the portal for digital enrolment. The movement has clocked 17 lakh registrations on its portal even as more BJP functionaries were joined Annamalai. The latest to quit BJP and join ‘We the Leaders’ was Amar Prasad Reddy, a close associate of Annamalai. Another former BJP leader associated with the movement said a missed-call-based enrolment system was also under consideration to complement the existing OTP registration process. “Those who have already enrolled through OTP verification will not be able to register again through the missed-call route, helping us prevent duplication of memberships,” he said. The meeting, first of its kind after Annamalai made his announcement, had brought together functionaries from other parts of the state as well. The functionaries are also planning a series of public outreach programmes. The movement would spend the next few months focusing on public issues affecting students, farmers and women instead of conventional political mobilisation, they said.
