The Coastal Road will be included in the Tata Mumbai Marathon route for the first time when the 21st edition of the race is held this year, marking a major change to the course followed over the past two decades.

The World Athletics Gold Label Race will be held on Sunday, January 18. This year, the Coastal Road will form part of the route for both the full marathon (42.195 km) and the half marathon.

The eight-lane Coastal Road was inaugurated in March 2024 and was built to ease traffic congestion along Mumbai’s western coastline. It is now used daily by commuters as a major expressway.

Procam International had stayed away from using the Coastal Road in the previous edition of the marathon, saying the stretch would not draw enough spectators compared to the traditional route.

For this year’s edition, the organisers changed their stand after discussions with civic authorities and the Mumbai police, who agreed to put traffic and safety arrangements in place along the Coastal Road.

Procam International joint managing director Vivek Singh said the organisers were thankful to the Mumbai police, MCGM, MSRDC and the Maharashtra government for supporting the inclusion of the Coastal Road in the race route.

The 21st edition of the Tata Mumbai Marathon will see a record 69,100 participants, including over 65,400 runners on ground and more than 3,700 runners in the virtual category, with 14,059 runners registered for the full marathon.
