The Maharashtra government has reaffirmed its pledge to ensure that every citizen has access to a dignified, affordable, and modern home. Over the past seven decades, MHADA has delivered nearly 9 lakh homes across Maharashtra, including 2.5 lakh in Mumbai alone. With 56 of its 114 colonies now set for urgent renewal, MHADA has been empowered as a Special Planning Authority (SPA) to accelerate approvals and execution. The transformation of Motilal Nagar in Goregaon West is one of Mumbai’s largest redevelopment stories. Spanning 143 acres, this project will rebuild 3,372 homes, 328 commercial establishments, and 1,600 slum units into a thriving modern township featuring community zones, a five-acre central park, and upgraded urban amenities. Built in the 1920s, the BDD Chawls at Worli, Naigaon, and NM Joshi Marg have been a symbol of Mumbai’s resilience for generations. Now, they are being transformed into modern 2BHK apartments, giving over 16,000 families ownership rights, open spaces, and access to community amenities. The Kamathipura redevelopment project is a landmark in Mumbai’s housing history. Spanning nearly 28 acres and covering lanes 1 to 15, it will rehouse 8,001 residents, compensate 800 landowners, and rebuild 943 cessed buildings into state-of-the-art high-rises reaching up to 78 floors. In Goregaon West, residents are receiving 650 sq. ft. modern flats with lifts, gardens, and community halls. In Sion, 1,200 Punjabi and Sindhi families displaced years ago are finally moving into spacious 635 sq. ft. homes built across 25 redeveloped buildings. The PMGP Colony in Jogeshwari, built under the Prime Minister’s Grant Project in the 1990s, is being reborn under MHADA’s stewardship. Covering 27,625 square meters, the project will deliver 984 modern flats of 450 sq. ft., replacing crumbling 180 sq. ft. tenements.
