NCW Seeks Stricter Charges, Wider Investigation In Amravati Sex Scandal
Nagpur: Expressing deep concern over the seriousness of allegations in the sexual abuse scandal at Paratwada in Amravati district, National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar questioned the adequacy of legal provisions invoked in the case and sought clarification on why stricter sections have not yet been applied. The key accused, Ayaan Ahmed, had allegedly created and circulated obscene videos and images of young girls. Rahatkar sought status on recovered digital content, directing authorities to intensify efforts to trace and retrieve all such material.Further, Rahatkar asked investigators to examine any financial angle behind the circulation of obscene content, including possible commercial exploitation, and to probe links between the accused and the premises where the alleged incidents occurred. The observations came during a high-level meeting chaired by Rahatkar on Friday to assess the progress of the probe. Senior officials present at the meeting included Amravati police commissioner Rakesh Ola, district magistrate Ashish Yerekar, superintendent of police (Amravati Rural) Vishal Anand and additional SP Achalpur, Shubham Kumar.According to the official briefing at the meeting, eight accused persons, including Ayaan, have been arrested so far. The case has been registered under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the POCSO Act and the Information Technology Act. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Shubham Kumar has been constituted to ensure a time-bound and transparent probe. Seized digital devices including mobile phones, a laptop and a tablet have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for detailed analysis and recovery of evidence. Highlighting the sensitive nature of the case, Rahatkar noted that victims may be reluctant to come forward due to fear of stigma and defamation. She directed officials to ensure strong witness protection mechanisms, conduct in-camera proceedings to safeguard identities and undertake community outreach to build trust and encourage reporting. The NCW chairperson also instructed authorities to coordinate with Maharashtra cyber crime department to ensure permanent removal of objectionable content from online platforms, preventing further circulation and harm. The Commission has directed officials to expedite forensic analysis and submit progress reports every five days, signalling close monitoring of the case.Reaffirming a zero-tolerance approach, the NCW said it remains committed to ensuring justice and protecting the dignity of women and girls, with strict and time-bound action in the Paratwada case.
