Ghaziabad: The city witnessed an average of three accidents per day, resulting in more than one death and two injuries, from Jan 1 to Nov 30 this year. As per traffic department data, a total of 1,007 accidents resulted in 376 deaths and injured 770 people across Ghaziabad during this period.
Data also shows that the city recorded an increase in road accidents compared to the previous year. In 2024, from Jan to Dec, the city recorded 996 accidents resulting in 381 deaths and injuring 789 people. The numbers were similar in 2023, when a total of 991 accidents resulted in 365 deaths and injured 704 people.
Additional CP (Law and Order and Traffic) Alok Priyadarshi said that efforts are underway to bring down the number of accidents and deaths in the district. Traffic police have identified 14 key locations with high accident rates. A Critical Corridor Team (CCT), including one sub-inspector and four constables, has been formed to bring down the number of accidents at these spots.
One of the stretches identified as a critical corridor is the stretch of DME under the Modinagar police jurisdiction, and Modinagar police station has been identified as a Critical Police Station.
The stretch was included in the list based on accident data from Oct 2022 to Oct 2025. This period recorded 46 accidents on the stretch, resulting in 48 deaths.
After Modinagar, cops will focus resources on accident-prevention at the DME stretch from UP Gate to Dasna.
"For effective enforcement and accident control on the said critical corridor, a special team has been nominated at the police station level comprising 1 sub-inspector and 4 head constables, who have been provided with speed laser guns, breath analysers, decibel meters, and body-worn cameras. The Critical Corridor Team (CCT) will also be provided first-aid training by govt hospital doctors. This team also investigates the cause of the accident. If there is any engineering fault or any other issue, it will be solved by the concerned authorities," the additional CP said.
The number of traffic cops in the district has been increased from 666 to 883. "Now, there are three traffic ACPs working; earlier, there was only one. There are now 12 traffic inspectors, 135 traffic sub-inspectors, 312 head constables, and 421 constables. The duty points have also increased from 176 to 237," the officer added.
As of Nov 30, traffic police issued nearly 13 lakh challans for various offences this year. In 2024, 13 lakh challans were issued from Jan to Dec, while the number of fines issued was over 16 lakh in 2023.
Traffic cops have also been deployed on the DME and EPE to keep a check on offenders.
As dense fog brings down visibility, traffic cops are removing vehicles parked on the NH-9 and DME, to reduce the risk of collisions.
