The medical college and hospital is being constructed on 25.38 acres of land at Haryana Farm in Dumraon at an estimated cost of Rs515 crore. Once completed, the facility is expected to significantly strengthen tertiary healthcare services in western Bihar.
An official associated with the project said the hospital would be a game-changer for the Shahabad region. “It will reduce the burden on major hospitals in Patna and ensure quality treatment closer to home,” the official said.
The hospital enjoys a strategic location and is situated around 5-6 km from Dumraon railway station. Located on the outskirts of the town, it will help patients and ambulances avoid city congestion.
To improve connectivity, the state govt has approved Rs12 crore for the construction of a 13.5-km-long approach road. The road will start from Dhakaich on NH-922, pass through the sub-divisional hospital, and extend up to the Koran Sarai bridge. Preliminary work on the road project has already begun.
A senior district official said good road connectivity is crucial for any major healthcare facility. “The approved road project will ensure smooth movement of patients and emergency vehicles,” the official said.
The hospital will have a regular OPD system, a modern emergency department, intensive care units, and advanced diagnostic facilities. Health officials believe this will substantially reduce referrals to Patna and Varanasi.
Apart from improving healthcare, the medical college is expected to boost social and economic development in the region by generating employment and attracting allied services.
Residents of Buxar, Ara, Rohtas, and adjoining districts will benefit directly, as they will no longer need to travel long distances for specialised treatment, said Omprakash Bhuvan, president of the district BJP.
“This institution will bring hope and relief to thousands of families. For the first time, Shahabad will have a hospital of this scale and quality,” a local resident said.
Once operational, the Dumraon Medical College and Hospital is expected to emerge as a major healthcare hub for the Shahabad region, said Pradeep Kumar Jaiswal, president of the Dumraon Chamber of Commerce and Industries.
