Pune: Rahul Devram Goykar, 24, who had escaped from the police lock-up in Khed-Rajgurunagar last month, was bludgeoned to death on Wednesday night at his native village Khandala in Karjat taluka of Ahmednagar district, about 180km from here.
The Ahmednagar police have arrested eight villagers, including three women under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
Panic prevailed in the Khandala village following the murder of Guykar, a criminal on police records.
Police personnel were deployed in the village in order to avoid any untoward incident.
Karjat police inspector Rajesh Chavan said Goykar’s murder was a fallout of a brawl during a marriage function held at Khandala village on November 20.
Goykar and his friend had entered into a brawl with one Bhausaheb Khandekar during the marriage procession.
On Wednesday night, Goykar barged into Khandekar’s house and started abusing him for beating up his friend during the marriage function.
“When Goykar started smashing windscreen of a sports utility vehicle (SUV), furious Khandekar and his relatives rushed out of their house and attacked him with sticks,” an Ahmednagar police officer said.
The police officer added that the suspects bludgeoned Goykar to death in front their house. They also smashed his head.
Khandekar then went to the Karjat police station and surrendered. “We have arrested Khandekar and his seven family members. Our probe is on,” the officer said.
Goykar had cases of murder, robberies and body offences registered against him with Pune and Ahmednagar police.
In October, Goykar and his accomplice, Vishal Tanadle, were caught by a team of Ale Phata police following a 3km hot chase. He and his gang members had assaulted and robbed a truck driver near Ale phata.
Goykar was handed over to the Khed police in a highway robbery case. “He, however, escaped from the police lock up,” a Pune rural police officer said.
Goykar was staying at his native village Khandala by changing his identity. He wanted to sell off his ancestral land and was looking for buyers.
