After conducting a series of tests, the health department on June 9 confirmed that Wasim had polio.
State health secretary Manmohan Singh had four days ago convened an urgent meeting of district collectors and district health officers from the nine districts, including some from the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, at Nanded to discuss the matter and take prompt corrective action.
Senior officials from Parbhani, Yavatmal, Hingoli, Adilabad, Nizamabad, Bidar and Medhak districts attended the meeting, where it was decided to give polio doses to all children from these districts on June 29 and 30 and July 3. A similar immunisation programme will be undertaken on August 3, 4 and 5.
Union health deputy commissioner Shobhen Sarkar and the World Health Organisation’s representative, Sunil Bahel, also visited Nanded following the detection of the polio case.
Chief executive officer of the Nanded zilla parishad, R.D. Bansod, told TNN that there was nothing abnormal in the detection of one polio case when over a lakh children have been immunised to the disease in the region.
