Trichy corporation deploys team to clean Cauvery river bank
Trichy: The health department of Trichy corporation has deployed a dedicated team of five sanitary workers to clean the Amma Mandapam ghats located on the bank of Cauvery river in Srirangam. Stating that the measure was an interim drive based on the request of Srirangam MLA S Ramesh, the urban local body has urged the Srirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple management that owns the ghats to appoint full-time HR&CE department workers to safeguard and clean the ghats and river bank.Recently, the Srirangam MLA inspected the Amma Mandapam ghats. Used clothes, flowers with plastic carry bags, and footwear were abandoned in the river, which accumulates near the ghats. Based on the MLA's request, corporation on Tuesday appointed five permanent sanitary workers to clean the ghats every evening. "Our intervention is only a temporary solution. We neither own the property nor generate any revenue through ticketing. The HR&CE department has recently recruited sanitary workers for the temple, and some of them can be deployed here. We will urge them to maintain the ghats," a corporation official said.
The local body said that it will insist the HR&CE department instruct the priests performing rituals on the river bank to behave responsibly while abandoning the waste. "We have provided bins, but both priests and devotees are not using them," the official added.
