Trichy: Two men died and four others were injured after their car rammed a roadside tree near Thanjavur in the early hours of Saturday.
The deceased were identified as R Thalapathy, 36, from Ammapettai, and M Tamilarasan, 27, from Ammanpettai. Thalapathy had a criminal history recorded at Nadukaveri police station.
The group is alleged to have consumed alcohol in Thiruvaiyaru for Thalapathy's birthday. Thalapathy and five others from Ammanpettai — Tamilarasan, Nitheesh, 25, Sudharsan, 21, Naren, 18, and Abinesh, 21— were returning from Thiruvaiyaru to Ammanpettai in the car. Tamilarasan was driving the vehicle. While travelling at high speed near Kandiyur, the car lost control, veered off the road, and crashed into a palm tree.
The occupants of the car sustained severe injuries. Local residents heard their cries, rushed to the spot, and rescued those trapped inside the vehicle.
Thalapathy and Tamilarasan died on the spot. The other four injured people were rushed to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital. Autopsies were later conducted at the same hospital.
Thiruvaiyaru police have registered a case under sections 281, 125(a), and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for rash driving, endangering lives, and causing death by negligence.
