Trichy: A six-month-old baby, who was abducted by an unidentified woman at the Panjapur integrated bus terminus on Saturday, was rescued safely by the Trichy city police from a gang in Mayiladuthurai on Sunday evening.
According to a complaint lodged by S Gajalakshmi, 28, she has been begging on streets and bus stands with her six-month-old baby girl. On Saturday afternoon, the woman’s husband Silambarasan, a driver by profession, visited MGMGH for some health complications. Gajalakshmi and their child met him at the govt hospital. At that time, an unidentified woman aged around 40 years befriended Gajalakshmi and promised her to get a job.
The woman convinced Gajalakshmi to accompany her with the infant to Panjapur bus terminus where they consumed food at a hotel. As Gajalakshmi handed over her baby to the woman and left for a washroom, the unidentified woman fled the terminus with the baby. Special teams were formed, and CCTV surveillance footage was analyzed to identify the suspects.
On Sunday evening, police rescued the abducted infant safely from a gang, and brought the baby to Trichy. Inquiry revealed that five people, including a couple, were involved.
Police said that a woman member of the gang abducted and transported the baby to hand her over to a couple who had been childless for the past 16 years.
All five suspects were detained and brought to Trichy for further inquiry.
