Udaipur: The inaugural edition of the Hindustan Zinc’s Vedanta Zinc City Half Marathon witnessed participation from global athletes, Indian elite runners and amateurs, making it a huge success here on Sunday.
Celebrated as India’s most beautiful marathon, this event places Udaipur on the global running map and champions the cause of #RunForZeroHunger.
Hindustan Zinc Limited, India’s largest and the world’s second-largest integrated zinc producer, proudly announced the successful completion of the inaugural AIMS-certified Vedanta Zinc City Half Marathon.
The races were flagged off by Manna Lal Rawat, MP Udaipur, Tarachand Jain, MLA Udaipur City, Phool Singh Meena, MLA Udaipur Rural, Rajesh Meena, Inspector General of Udaipur Range, Ram Prakash, Commissioner Nagar Nigam, Udaipur, Shashi Kiran, chief PRO North-Western Railways, Rahul Jain, commissioner, Udaipur Development Authority, Nemichand Parekh, RTO, Udaipur, Arun Misra, CEO HZL, Umesh Manwani, honorary secretary, Field Club, Udaipur and Dr Manoj Soni, founder ABCR (Anybody Can Run).
With three race categories – 21-km, 10-km, and 5- km -- the event catered to runners of all fitness levels. The highlight of the event was a unique run designed for more than 100 differently abled people from Hindustan Zinc’s flagship Jeevan Tarang programme.
The people of Udaipur poured out on the streets in the early hours of the morning to cheer the runners on. Participants enjoyed a scenic route around the serene Fateh Sagar Lake and the majestic Aravalli Ranges, taking in the beauty of Maharana Pratap Smarak, Neemuch Mata Mandir hill, and lush green gardens of the city.
In the fiercely contested 21-km challenge in the male category, Rohit Bansiwal triumphed followed by Victor Kurgat securing first runner up position and Gopal Bairwa as second runner up.
Madina Paul reigned supreme in the female section. She pipped Sonal Sukhwal and Khushi Pahwa to the second and third spots, respectively.
In the 10-km men’s group, Ajit Kumar won, while Ganpat Singh and Durgendra bagged silver and bronze, respectively.
Khushboo claimed the top position in the 10-km women’s group. She was followed by Sapna Kumari and Sunita Gurjar, respectively.
