AP plans zero-waste push for 22 temples

Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh is planning a zero-waste management model for 22 temples across the state, with shrine authorities asked to prepare action plans within a month to recycle and reuse waste generated within temple premises. The move emerged during a recent high-level review meeting of executive officers of 22 temples held at the endowments department headquarters at Gollapudi here. The new policy direction aims to reduce pressure on municipal dumping yards by ensuring that waste generated at temples is scientifically managed and reused within temple premises.Temple waste, including flower offerings, food residue, coconut waste and wastewater, is proposed to be processed and recycled locally instead of being transported outside for disposal. The proposed model includes composting and waste-management systems, rooftop rainwater harvesting, wastewater recycling, solar power and piped-gas facilities.Temple authorities have been asked to prepare proposals, tenders and cost estimates within a month, following which the plans will be submitted for approval and implementation. The initiative is expected to cover 22 temples across the state, including seven major shrines.
Solar systems are proposed to be sourced through NREDCAP, while biogas and waste-management infrastructure is planned in coordination with the Swach Andhra Corporation.Officials said the initiative seeks to create self-sustaining temple ecosystems where rainwater, wastewater and biodegradable waste are treated and reused locally rather than adding pressure on civic infrastructure.Endowments Department Commissioner K Ramachandra Mohan directed officials to pursue the zero-waste approach and prepare detailed action plans as part of the Swach Andhra-linked green management push.
