Vijayawada: Justice Lisa Gill assumed charge as a judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on Friday. Chief Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur administered the oath of office to Justice Gill in the first court hall of the High Court.
Justice Gill was transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court from the Punjab and Haryana High Court. With Chief Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur due to retire in April, Justice Gill is set to take over as the Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, becoming the first woman to hold the post.
Justice Gill is also the first judge to be transferred in advance to the high court where the judge is proposed to be appointed as chief justice, according to a policy decision taken by the Supreme Court collegium.
A native of Chandigarh, Justice Lisa Gill completed her LLB and LLM at Panjab University. She began her legal practice at the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 1990 and was appointed as a judge of the same high court on March 31, 2014.
High court judges, additional solicitor general Challa Dhanunjay, advocate general Dammalapati Srinivas, Advocates Association vice-president K V Raghu Kumar, Bar Council chairman Dwarakanath Reddy, public prosecutor Lakshmi Narayana, senior advocates and members of the Bar attended the ceremony.
