Visakhapatnam: Five workers, including three women, were hospitalised after they fell unconscious while shifting acetanilide (a crystalline odourless powder) from a container to a truck in the godown of Shravan Shippings in Vizag city on Friday night.
The victims were identified as Gunupur Ramu, Bobbili Lakshmi, G Latha, Pothala Kumari, and G Demudu Naidu. They were initially admitted to Simhagiri hospital. Later, following district collector MN Harendhira Prasad’s instructions, they were shifted to KIMS Icon hospital. Demudu Naidu, who was initially critical upon hospitalisation, responded positively to treatment. The condition of all five is stable now.
Officials suspect the five workers fell ill after inhaling some chemical compound while shifting the acetanilide. Vizag collector Prasad, city police chief Shankabratha Bagchi, and Visakha West MLA PVGR Naidu visited the hospital to check the condition of the victims.
