Kolkata honours Kelucharan Mahapatra through Odissi and legacy

Kolkata marked an evening of devotion and artistic excellence with Guru Smaranam 2026, a commemorative programme held at Rabindra Sadan to honour the legacy of Odissi maestro Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra on his 21st death anniversary and centenary birth year.The event opened with a serene Pushpanjali, setting a contemplative tone for the evening. A distinguished gathering from the world of Indian classical dance—including Tanusree Sankar, Sharmila Biswas, Ratikanta Mohapatra, and Priyadarshini Govind—lent gravitas to the occasion, with their felicitation underscoring the enduring influence of the guru’s legacy.A key highlight was the launch of The Living Sculpture: Odissi Between Temple and Modernity by Dr. Rajib Bhattacharya. The book examines the stylistic contributions of pioneering gurus Pankaj Charan Das, Debaprasad Das, and Kelucharan Mahapatra, tracing the evolution of Odissi from its temple origins to a refined classical form on the modern stage.The performance segment brought together some of the finest exponents of Indian classical dance. Presentations by Ratikanta Mohapatra, Priyadarshini Govind, Tanusree Sankar and her ensemble, and Sharmila Biswas stood out for their depth, precision, and emotive storytelling, creating an atmosphere of both artistic brilliance and spiritual immersion.Choreographic works by Dr. Bhattacharya, along with performances by his ensemble members, reflected a thoughtful blend of tradition and innovation—echoing the dynamic yet rooted nature of Odissi itself.
