Kashmir Files to Kabir Singh: Highest grossiing 'A' rated Bollywood films at the box office

Bollywood's fascination with 'A' rated films, known for pushing boundaries and exploring daring narratives, has seen several releases dominate the box office. As Ranbir Kapoor's upcoming release of 'Animal' gets ready to make a splash, here's a look back at some unexpected successes including 'The Kashmir Files' and the hugely controversial 'Kabir Singh'. These films have not only pushed the envelope but also redefined success in the industry.

Animal

Set to hit the screens on December 1, 'Animal' is creating waves even before its release. Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the film is expected to mark Ranbir Kapoor's biggest opening to date. With advance booking reports hinting at a formidable start, 'Animal' explores a character driven by instinct to protect his family, earning its title. The film's All India Day 1 advance earning stands at a promising Rs 6.42 Crore, with strong bookings in key states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh.

OMG 2

Despite facing delays with the censor board, Amit Rai's 'OMG 2,' the sequel to the 2012 hit 'OMG – Oh My God!,' concluded its run at the box office with a lifetime collection of Rs 221.08 crore. The movie managed to rake in the big bucks with an 'A' certificate. Although the film's cast, crew and even fans got together to call for the CBFC to revise its certification and grant the film a U/A certificate, the board refused to budge.

The Kashmir Files

Vivek Agnihotri's directorial venture, 'The Kashmir Files,' defied all odds and expectations to become the first film after the pandemic to cross the Rs 300 crore mark in India. Despite lacking star power, extensive promotions, and dealing with a serious subject, the film's success can be attributed to strong word-of-mouth and an engaged audience. With a worldwide gross of Rs 337.23 crore, 'The Kashmir Files' not only became the highest-grossing film 2022, it also became one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of all time.

5/6

Kabir Singh

Grossing over Rs 370 crore, 'Kabir Singh' stands as Shahid Kapoor's highest-grossing solo-lead release. The film, which became the second-highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2019, did so, with an 'A' certificate owing to its graphic visual content and adult dialogues. The film that was mired in controversy, even became one of the top 10 highest-grossing Hindi films ever, surpassing even Vicky Kaushal's 'Uri'.
6/6

Udta Punjab

Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, 'Udta Punjab' faced its share of controversies, with its leak online impacting its box office potential. Despite the setback, the stiff opposition from various groups, the film managed to earn a worldwide gross of Rs 97 crore, showcasing the impact of its hard-hitting narrative on the audience.
