
There was a time when apple cider vinegar used to sit in kitchen cabinets, mostly used in salad dressings or homemade remedies. Today, it has become a wellness obsession. Social media videos show people taking “shots” of apple cider vinegar every morning, influencers swear by it for rapid fat loss, and some even call it a natural alternative to expensive weight-loss drugs.
But somewhere between wellness trends and reality, an important question is getting lost: are people actually helping their health, or slowly harming it?
Experts say apple cider vinegar, often called ACV, is not dangerous when used correctly. The problem begins when people start treating it like a miracle fix. More does not mean faster weight loss. And in many cases, the body pays the price for this misunderstanding.
A growing number of nutritionists are now warning that people are overdosing on ACV, consuming it undiluted, taking it several times a day, or replacing healthy habits with a single acidic drink. What started as a wellness hack may now be turning into a risky trend.
Experts also caution that excessive intake may damage tooth enamel, irritate the throat, and interfere with certain medicines.

Lavleen Kaur, Chief Dietitian and Founder of Santushti Holistic Health, believes social media has amplified unrealistic expectations around apple cider vinegar.
“The use of apple cider vinegar has gained popularity for weight loss, but after analysing some of the latest social media trends, it becomes clear that many are abusing it, or at least overdosing. More is not better in this case. Doing it too much can irritate the stomach lining, exacerbate acidity, and dent tooth enamel. It can even bring digestive distress in individuals,” she says.
That warning matters because many people are consuming concentrated vinegar shots daily without understanding how acidic ACV really is. Apple cider vinegar contains acetic acid, and repeated exposure can wear down dental enamel over time. Some doctors have also linked excessive use to throat irritation and worsening acid reflux.
The fascination with ACV also reflects a deeper wellness culture problem: the desire for quick results. A bottle feels easier than changing eating habits, sleeping better, or exercising consistently. But health experts repeatedly say there is no evidence that vinegar alone melts fat away.
The NIH published study on apple cider vinegar and weight loss points out that while a few small studies showed modest results, the evidence remains weak and inconsistent. Some studies even suggest the feeling of fullness people experience may come from nausea or stomach discomfort rather than real appetite control.

The answer is more complicated than wellness influencers make it seem.
Some studies suggest ACV may slightly improve fullness and help reduce overeating when paired with a healthy diet. But experts say its effect is modest at best.
“Apple cider vinegar is not a magical fat-loss solution. In some cases, it could only indirectly assist with weight management by making people more meal-conscious or making them feel slightly fuller. But it is unrealistic to expect visible weight loss from vinegar alone,” says Lavleen Kaur.
She adds, “Sustainable outcomes remain ultimately contingent on overall eating, sleep, physical activity, stress, and consistency.”
That is perhaps the most overlooked part of the conversation. People often focus on one ingredient instead of the bigger picture. Weight management is influenced by hormones, metabolism, stress, sleep quality, muscle mass, physical activity, and eating patterns. ACV may play a tiny supporting role, but it cannot compensate for poor lifestyle habits.

If someone still wishes to include ACV in their routine, moderation is critical.
“For most healthy adults, however, it’s generally quite simple: 1 to 2 teaspoons, well diluted, in a large glass of water,” says Lavleen Kaur.
Anshul Singh, Team Lead, Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics Department at Artemis Hospitals, echoes the same advice.
“To drink apple cider vinegar correctly, it should always be diluted first. Mix 1 to 2 tsp apple cider vinegar in a large glass of water. You may find that drinking it once a day before meals helps you feel fuller and overeating may decrease,” he says.
He further explains, “Quality is more important than quantity. Drinking a lot of apple cider vinegar won’t help you lose weight any faster. Overuse can irritate the throat, damage tooth enamel and cause stomach discomfort.”
Experts also caution against drinking ACV on an empty stomach, especially in people already dealing with bloating, acidity, or digestive sensitivity.
“It is usually tolerated better prior to or with meals rather than at random times of the day,” says Kaur.
Another growing concern is the market of sugary ACV wellness drinks and gummies that promise detoxification and rapid fat loss. Many contain added sugars, flavour enhancers, or misleading health claims that cancel out the intended benefits.

For some people, even moderate use may not be safe.
“People who develop acid reflux, gastritis, ulcers, renal complications, low potassium status, or are being treated with diabetes drugs should not consume it on a daily basis without expert advice,” warns Lavleen Kaur.
Anshul Singh also advises caution for those with existing digestive disorders.
“If you have acid reflux, stomach ulcers or certain medical conditions consult a doctor before adding it to your routine,” he says.
This becomes especially important because ACV may interact with medications, including insulin and certain diuretics.
Many people assume that because something is “natural,” it must automatically be safe. But nutrition experts say even natural substances can become harmful when taken excessively or without medical guidance.
In severe cases, highly acidic drinks consumed daily may contribute to digestive inflammation, enamel erosion, and worsening gut discomfort.

Perhaps the strongest point experts make is also the simplest one.
“In my own clinical experience, we have numerous cases of people hurting their digestive health because they took extreme advice and advice from the Internet unreflectively,” says Lavleen Kaur.
She adds, “Also, one drink won’t fix bad behaviour. If meals are highly processed, sleep is lacking, stress is uncontrolled and movement is not frequent, then apple cider vinegar alone is not going to affect real change.”
That sentence cuts through the noise surrounding wellness culture today. The body does not respond to shortcuts the way social media promises it will. Sustainable weight loss still comes from routines that can realistically continue for years, not trends followed for two weeks.
Anshul Singh puts it simply: “Apple cider vinegar can be a minor helper but only if used in small amounts. The real keys to healthy and lasting weight loss are safe use balanced lifestyle habits and patience.”
Celebrities including Katy Perry and Jennifer Aniston have publicly spoken about using apple cider vinegar in wellness routines. But experts caution that celebrity habits are not universal health advice, especially when individual medical conditions and nutritional needs differ greatly.
