Story: A group of young marine biologists come upon an underwater sarcophagus on one of their adventures. They raid it for the treasure within, inadvertently releasing a calamity onto themselves.
Review: 'Gadad Andhar' is a bold step in the right direction. The movie pushes the barriers of regional cinema on the brilliant application of technology.
The film manages to set the tone from the very beginning, with the eerie setting accentuated by haunting lightwork. We are introduced to a group of four scuba diving youngsters who are on an expedition. The first half sees a smorgasbord of underwater scenes coupled with Rajiv (Jay Dudhane) showing off his incredible physique at every chance he gets.
Things take a turn when Chinmayi (Neha Mahajan) finds an underwater coffin that the group retrieves, releasing an evil spirit that now haunts them.
The film deserves praise for fulfilling the mammoth task of underwater shooting and for doing it well. Adinath Patkar has done a great job with the bone chilling background score. The sound, coupled with the old mansion, draws one into the story. While the technical side shines, it is thoroughly let down by the mediocre acting and clunky dialogue. The characters are unidimensional and mostly fall flat. While Mahajan and Shubhangi Tambale deliver some powerful scenes, the script falls back to a disconnected drawl right after.
That being said, 'Gadad Andhar' is still a good example of a well-executed horror film. There is much to look for in this movie, from agoraphobia causing seascapes, to animated sequences. Watch it for a good scare this weekend.
