Assembly Elections 2026 Highlights: 'BJP's downfall has begun,' says Mamata Banerjee women's reservation bill falls in Lok Sabha

The 2026 Assembly elections are being held in multiple phases, beginning with the first round of voting on April 9 and continuing through subsequent rounds later in April, with counting scheduled for mid-May. States going to polls include Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, and West Bengal, each presenting distinct political dynamics and electoral battlegrounds. The BJP-led NDA is aiming to retain power in Assam and expand its footprint in southern and eastern regions, while the Congress-led INDIA bloc and regional parties are striving to consolidate anti-incumbency sentiment. Key campaign themes include economic concerns, welfare delivery, law and order, and regional aspirations. The Election Commission has increased vigilance, deploying central forces and implementing administrative reshuffles to curb malpractice. As campaigning intensifies for upcoming phases, alliances, candidate selection, and voter turnout will play a decisive role in determining the final outcome of these high-stakes elections.

"We will get 100 seats in Assam and 200 in West Bengal," he said.

"Our only concern is why Bangladeshis should be allowed to enter our country. Mamata Banerjee doesn't let us stop Bangladeshi from entering the country. It is very important to fence the border, especially in West Bengal...," he added. (ANI)

West Bengal polls: Yogi Adityanath urges voters to pick BJP's 'double-engine' model
Campaigning for the BJP in poll-bound West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday pitched the "double-engine government" model to the people of the poll-bound state, highlighting the progress UP has made under the BJP.

Addressing a gathering in Bolpur, CM Yogi emphasised how "the world's largest Hindu temple, the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple", was built in UP under the BJP tenure, asserting that the opposition parties cannot match the mettle of "double engine".

"The world's largest Hindu temple - the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple - has been built in Ayodhya. Can anyone stop it? Can the Congress, the Communists, the TMC, or their allies stop it? They cannot match the speed of the double engine... Instead of unrest, there is a pleasant atmosphere in Uttar Pradesh," he said.

Taking further aim at the incumbent TMC government, he accused the party of turning West Bengal into a centre of "corruption, fear and anarchy" during their tenure. "Let the BJP government come... All of them will be seen sweeping the streets of Bengal", he added.

Nearly 23% of the candidates contesting the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections have declared criminal cases against themselves, according to a report released on Thursday by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and West Bengal Election Watch.

Among the major parties, the BJP has the highest share of candidates with criminal cases, with 106 out of 152 nominees (70%) declaring such cases in their affidavits.

Out of the 148 candidates the ruling Trinamool Congress has fielded, 63 have criminal cases (43%), while 43 of the 98 candidates of the CPI(M) and 39 of the 151 nominees of the Congress have also declared criminal antecedents.

"Data again shows that parties continue to give preference to winnability over clean public life despite repeated court directions," a representative associated with the report said.

The analysis, based on self-sworn affidavits of 1,475 of the 1,478 candidates contesting in 152 constituencies going to polls on April 23, said 345 aspirants have declared pending criminal cases, and 294 have disclosed serious criminal charges.

West Bengal polls: Congress releases 'people's chargesheet' against TMC, BJP
The West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee on Thursday released a 'people's chargesheet', accusing the ruling TMC and the BJP-led central government of failing the people of the state on issues ranging from corruption and unemployment to cultural identity and funds allocation.

The document alleged that Bengal had suffered under "misgovernance at the state level and neglect at the national level".

In the section targeting the TMC government, the Congress alleged that the state had witnessed the rise of a "syndicate raj", large-scale financial scandals, recruitment irregularities, recurring violence against women and communal unrest.

It also claimed that rising public debt, industrial decline and youth migration reflected deep-rooted governance failures.

"The people of Bengal deserve accountability, not a politics of blame-shifting between two parties that have both let the state down," a senior state Congress leader said at the launch of the 'people's chargesheet'.

The 'chargesheet' cited alleged scams such as the Saradha and Rose Valley chit fund cases, the school recruitment controversy and the ration distribution scam as examples of what it called "institutionalised corruption" under the present dispensation.

The party also criticised the BJP at the Centre, accusing it of promoting "systematic anti-Bengal sentiment", withholding central funds meant for welfare schemes and attempting to undermine Bengal's linguistic and cultural heritage.

The party alleged that central agencies were being used selectively to target political opponents in the state. (PTI)

West Bengal polls: Abhishek Banerjee 'dares' Amit Shah to be in Kolkata on counting day
Senior TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee on Thursday challenged Union home minister Amit Shah to be present in Kolkata on the day of counting, even as he accused the BJP of intimidating party workers ahead of West Bengal polls.

"If you have the courage, be in Kolkata on the day of counting, we will see then," Banerjee said at an election rally at Bhagabanpur in Purba Medinipur district as he expressed confidence about his aunt and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee returning to power for a fourth term with a strong mandate.

Elections to the 294-member Assembly will be held in two phases - on April 23 and 29. Votes will be counted on May 4. (PTI)

Alleging threats from BJP leaders, he said, "We are being threatened. The home minister is saying Trinamool workers should not step out of their homes or they will be jailed. I want to tell him that no one has the courage to come here and threaten people of Bengal."

With a keen contest expected between the BJP and the TMC in the Assembly polls, Banerjee hinted at possible political retaliation. "I have prepared a list -- block by block, panchayat by panchayat. Accounts will be settled with interest and principal," he told the gathering.

Tamil Nadu polls: NTK chief Seeman hits out at DMK and AIADMK over freebies
NTK chief Seeman on Thursday charged both the ruling DMK and opposition AIADMK for providing freebies instead of improving the health and education sectors in the state.

He assured that if his party comes to power after the April 23 polls, he would upgrade all government hospitals, provide better education, proper drinking water and ensure the welfare of the farmers, besides solving the unemployment issue.

"Freebie culture should have been stopped. They (Dravidian parties) should have concentrated on improving the standards of the people," Seeman said during a poll.

Alleging that the DMK and AIADMK were ruling the state for several decades by wooing people through freebies and various financial assistance schemes, Seeman asked, "From where do they get money, and the state debt has crossed Rs 10 lakh crore."

The DMK, in its election manifesto for upcoming Assembly polls, has announced providing a coupon worth Rs 8,000 under the ‘Illatharasi’ (homemaker) scheme to buy new/replace household electronic appliances for their family, increasing the monthly grant under ‘Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai’ (women entitlement) to Rs 2,000, from the present Rs 1,000.

Similarly, the AIADMK has announced free refrigerators for all rice ration cardholders, three free LPG cylinders per year to eligible households and one-time grant of Rs 10,000 to every family to manage tax burden and price rise. (PTI)

Addressing a poll rally at Mathabhanga in Cooch Behar district, Banerjee said attempts are being made to divide India by connecting the women's reservation and delimitation bills.

"Attempts are being made to divide India by linking women's reservation and delimitation bills. Connecting these bills is a conspiracy to delete voters' names and implement NRC," she said.

West Bengal polls: TMC writes to EC seeking action against Humayun Kabir for poll code violation
West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress on Thursday approached the Election Commission of India (ECI), accusing former party legislator, Humayun Kabir, who has floated his own political outfit to contest the upcoming Assembly elections, of violating the Model Code of Conduct.

In an email sent to the office of the state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), a hard copy of which is available with IANS, the Trinamool accused Kabir of making derogatory public statements against several ruling party leaders, including General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee.

Along with the complaint, the Trinamool also attached a video of a press conference addressed by Kabir, where he was heard making such comments.

Such comments by Kabir, it argued, were a blatant violation of the MCC, which bars candidates of any political party from indulging in any activities or making any statements that would amount to an attack on the personal life of any person or statements that may be malicious or offending decency and morality.

“If one is arrested, another will take his place. We will continue to fight. It is not so easy to control Bengal. They are threatening to put people behind bars. I want to see how powerful they are,” the CM said at a rally in West Midnapore’s Pingla. She coined the slogan “Big brother has come from Delhi along with ED and CBI”.

“ED and CBI are conducting raids at midnight as orders are being given to arrest TMC workers. But if you arrest one, lakhs will come out,” Mamata warned. Tamil Nadu elections: BJP schemes driven by power motives, minorities targeted through laws, says Congress MLA
Congress MLA from Velachery, Tamil Nadu, Hasan Moulana, alleged that the BJP’s flagship schemes are aimed at gaining political power and claimed that people recognise an “ulterior motive” behind such initiatives. Drawing a contrast with former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s Panchayati Raj reforms, he said they were not driven by political considerations.

Moulana further alleged that legislations such as the Waqf Amendment Act, FCRA, and CAA-NRC have adversely affected minority communities.

“BJP’s idea behind bringing any flagship scheme is to bring their government into power. So, whatever the BJP introduces has an ulterior motive, and people understand this. When Rajiv Gandhi introduced Panchayati Raj, he did not have any ulterior motive. He simply said that anyone from the panchayat could become the president, and it was not party-oriented... People should understand that when any bill is brought forward, such as the Waqf Amendment Act, it affects Muslim minorities. With FCRA, Christian minorities may be targeted. Through CAA and NRC, Muslim minorities, as well as people who came from Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Bangladesh during times of conflict, and even some from Bhutan and Nepal, have been affected. This is being done because these are people who are not BJP voters.”

Tamil Nadu polls: 'Mega alliance led by the NDA will form government after elections,' says Tamil Nadu BJP President Nainar Nagendran
Tamil Nadu BJP President Nainar Nagendran says, "I wish everyone a Happy Tamil New Year on behalf of the BJP. In Tamil Nadu, a fascist, anti-people, and family rule is going on. With various strategies to defeat the DMK in the upcoming elections, the mega alliance led by the NDA will form the government after the elections. The DMK has not properly fulfilled even a single promise. The deteriorating law and order situation and the increasing crimes against women are examples of their rule. The AIADMK has already released its manifesto, and now we have released ours. The NDA will definitely form the government."

The Assembly Elections 2026 have entered a crucial phase, with the first round of polling successfully conducted on April 9 across key constituencies. Meanwhile, campaign activity is intensifying across West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.

For West Bengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the “mood in West Bengal is clearly favouring the BJP” after interacting with party workers in Siliguri, citing grassroots feedback against the ruling All India Trinamool Congress. BJP MP Manoj Tiwari is also set to hold multiple campaign events, including roadshows and rallies, as polling approaches in two phases on April 23 and April 29.

In Tamil Nadu, the campaign has turned sharply confrontational. Raja Anbazhagan of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam expressed confidence of a decisive win from T. Nagar, projecting a margin of over 10,000 votes and highlighting infrastructure and connectivity improvements under the current government. He also targeted his opponent B. Sathyanarayanan, questioning his credibility, and dismissed remarks by Edappadi K. Palaniswami as being driven by “fear of electoral defeat”.

Countering the DMK, Tamilisai Soundararajan of the Bharatiya Janata Party alleged a complete lack of development and widespread corruption under the ruling party, calling for a political shift in favour of the NDA.

Meanwhile in Kerala, the Leader of the Opposition V D Satheesan has raised concerns over delays in the release of official polling data from the April 9 elections, urging the Election Commission of India to publish constituency-wise figures promptly to ensure transparency.
