Assembly Elections 2026 Highlights: West Bengal elections - Mamata targets BJP, EC at TMC poll manifesto launch

Assembly Elections 2026 Live Updates: CPM rebel leader G Sudhakaran on Friday said he would campaign against Agriculture Minister P Prasad in Cherthala, accusing him of making unwarranted remarks.

Speaking to reporters here, Sudhakaran, who is contesting as an Independent candidate from Ambalappuzha with the backing of the UDF, said he had earlier decided not to take part in campaign activities outside his constituency.

“I had decided not to attend any election campaign outside Ambalappuzha. But now I have decided to campaign against Prasad in Cherthala as he has made unnecessary statements against me,” he said.

Prasad had recently said that Sudhakaran’s decision to contest the election was driven by his desire for power and that voters would reject him.

Sudhakaran alleged that Prasad made the remarks without consulting the CPI state or district leadership.

“He is the only person in the CPI who has spoken against me. The party has not officially commented on the matter so far,” he said.

He said he now has every right to campaign for Prasad’s defeat in Cherthala.

The elections are expected to witness intense contests nationwide. In Assam, the BJP faces competition from the Congress and regional parties. In West Bengal, the main battle is between Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress and the BJP. Tamil Nadu is set for a three-cornered fight involving the DMK-led alliance, the AIADMK-BJP combine and Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), while in Kerala, the contest is likely to centre around the LDF and UDF, with the BJP aiming to expand its presence. Puducherry is also gearing up for a closely watched electoral battle.

West Bengal and Assam are expected to witness multi-phase polling due to their large electorates, while Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry are likely to go to the polls in a single phase.

To ensure smooth and secure voting, the Election Commission is expected to deploy over 1,500 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), amounting to more than 1.4 lakh personnel. Security arrangements will also involve state police forces, with special observers overseeing preparedness and randomisation processes. Advanced deployment of central forces is already underway in West Bengal, Assam and other poll-bound regions to manage logistics, regulate voter movement and maintain law and order.

In West Bengal, the Commission will continue adjudication of around 60 lakh ‘doubtful’ voter cases under the supervision of judicial officers appointed by the Calcutta High Court. Supplementary electoral rolls will be published following approvals, while returning officers have been appointed for all 294 constituencies.

  • West Bengal: Polling will be held in two phases from April 23, with a high-stakes contest between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP. Around 60 lakh ‘doubtful’ voter cases remain under review, and returning officers have been appointed for all 294 seats. Multi-phase polling and heavy CAPF deployment are expected.
  • Assam: Voting is scheduled for April 9 across 126 seats, with the BJP facing a challenge from the Congress and regional parties. Given its large electorate, the state may witness multi-phase polling along with significant central force deployment.
  • Tamil Nadu: The state will vote on April 23 for 234 seats, with a three-way contest involving the DMK-led alliance, the AIADMK-BJP combine and TVK. A single-phase election is likely as campaigning intensifies.
  • Kerala: Polling will take place on April 9 across 140 seats, with a direct contest between the LDF and UDF, while the BJP looks to expand its presence. The state is expected to have single-phase voting with close monitoring.
  • Puducherry: The Union Territory will go to the polls on April 9 for all 30 seats, with a tight contest between local alliances. A single-phase election is expected, with security and logistics managed through central and state forces.

Puducherry NDA crisis averted as AINRC, BJP finalise seat-sharing
After days of speculation over cracks in the NDA in Puducherry, the alliance partners have resolved their differences. The All India NR Congress (AINRC), which leads the NDA in the Union territory, will contest 16 of the 30 assembly seats, while the BJP and its allies will fight the remaining 14.

The BJP is expected to contest 10 seats, leaving two seats each for the AIADMK and the Latchiya Jananayaga Katchi (LJK), founded by Jose Charles Martin, son of lottery businessman Santiago Martin.

AINRC founder and chief minister N Rangasamy, who had opposed LJK’s entry into the alliance, eventually relented following direct intervention from the BJP leadership in New Delhi. He later met Union minister and BJP’s Puducherry election in-charge Mansukh Mandaviya at a hotel, ending speculation about a possible split in the alliance.

Addressing reporters alongside Mandaviya, Rangasamy reiterated that AINRC remains firmly committed to the NDA. He said the alliance would contest the election unitedly and pointed to the Centre’s support for Puducherry, including projects worth ₹3,000 crore sanctioned for the Union territory.

On the controversy over LJK’s inclusion, Rangasamy said Union home minister Amit Shah had personally advised him that bringing the new party into the fold would strengthen the coalition. Accepting that advice, he confirmed, the party was inducted into the alliance.

Mandaviya underlined that Rangasamy would continue to lead the NDA in Puducherry. He said the alliance would fight the election under the chief minister’s leadership.

On AINRC’s long-pending demand for statehood for Puducherry, Mandaviya said the issue would be taken up in the alliance manifesto. He also announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah would campaign in Puducherry for the upcoming polls.

The NDA’s successful resolution of the standoff is being seen as a setback for the opposition INDI bloc, which had hoped to benefit from divisions within the ruling alliance. With seat-sharing now settled, the NDA has shifted into full campaign mode.

Meanwhile, the INDI bloc is yet to finalise its own seat-sharing formula, though hopefuls from the Congress and DMK have already begun filing nominations. Earlier, Rangasamy filed his papers from two constituencies, Thattanchavady and Mangalam. By Friday, more than 130 candidates had filed nominations, with Monday being the last date for submission.

Not a CM probable; ideally post should go to elected MLA: Shashi Tharoor on Kerala Assembly elections
Ahead of the Kerala Assembly polls, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Thursday said he is not a chief ministerial probable as he is not a candidate in the election and believes that ideally the CM should be picked from among the elected MLAs.

In an exclusive interview with PTI, Tharoor said since he is not a candidate, he does not have to worry about one particular constituency and that his role in the state polls is a "mixed bag". He added that he is looking forward to going "up and down the length and breadth of the state" to campaign.

Tharoor also referred to former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi's advice to UDF leaders recently in which he metaphorically asked them to "dance together", and said it was a "good message" to give and now "everyone is dancing together".

Tharoor also said that while he would be happy with a majority, a figure between 85-100 seats would be good for the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in the 140-member assembly.

Using cricketing analogy, Tharoor said the UDF is bowling "googlies" particularly to the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) because "they are on a sticky wicket and we can catch them on that".

Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026 Live: Former TVK leader Ranjana Nachiyaar joins DMK ahead of Tamil Nadu polls

Former Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Ranjana Nachiyaar on Thursday joined Dravid Munnetra Kazhagam ahead of the Assembly elections.

She met with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin after joining the DMK.

Speaking with ANI, the actress attributed her switch to TVK leader Vijay's alleged hypocrisy, unapproachable nature, and alleged disrespect of women. She further said, being a party in power with public trust, DMK is a more comfortable choice.

"TVK is a party which leader Vijay has started. He says that he is going to give a difference in party... but he does not keep up his words. He should come and meet people... I suspect so many things in the party. The leader disrespecting women on stage on the day of Women's Day... He is not approachable to the party cadres, women leaders and the people too... DMK is a party that is already in power, and because people have trust and believe in DMK, I think this is more comfortable...," she said.

She further dismissed speculations of TVK forming alliances with major parties for seats, stating that Vijay's alleged unapproachable nature does not allow that to happen.

"TVK does not have any idea of any alliance with any party. I don't think they are fit to talk about an alliance. The leader has to be approachable for the other party leaders. I have seen so many leaders trying to approach to join TVK but they have escaped because he is not approachable," she said.

On the other hand, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and Actor Vijay on Wednesday refuted the rumours suggesting that the party will form an alliance with other major political parties, saying TVK is with social and secular justice and won't compromise it.

Earlier, Bordoloi formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and state BJP president Dilip Saikia.

West Bengal Assembly Election 2026 Live: BJP’s Rahul Sinha supports EC move, claims it will ensure clean elections
BJP leader Rahul Sinha on Wednesday supported the Election Commission’s recent bureaucratic reshuffle in West Bengal, calling it a crucial step toward ensuring free and fair elections. He claimed the move had “broken Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s syndicate.”

Sinha alleged that the state police had been filled with “sycophants” loyal to Mamata Banerjee, forming a network that, according to him, contributed to law and order concerns. He further accused the Chief Minister of attempting to incite tensions between communities, though he said both Hindus and Muslims showed restraint.

“Mamata Banerjee wanted riots to take place in West Bengal and tried to provoke divisions between Hindus and Muslims, but people did not fall for it,” he said, adding that the reshuffle addressed the issue by removing officers aligned with her.

He also praised the Election Commission for appointing officers with “good records,” saying the changes would help ensure peaceful polls and prevent violence during elections.

Counting of votes for all states and the UT is scheduled for May 4. The dates were announced at a 4 pm press conference, where the poll panel outlined the phases, timelines and key procedures.

The announcement comes as the deadline to file appeals against West Bengal’s final electoral roll—published on February 28 with over 6.4 crore registered voters—approaches. In the other poll-bound regions, the appeal window has already closed. The ECI has carried out special intensive revisions of electoral rolls across all five regions to ensure accuracy ahead of voting.

Earlier this month, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, visited the poll-bound states to review preparedness. The Commission has also deployed Central Observers, invoking its plenary powers under Article 324 of the Constitution and Section 20B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, to oversee the conduct of elections and strengthen on-ground management.

Based on past trends, West Bengal and Assam are likely to witness multi-phase polling due to their large electorates, while Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry are expected to vote in a single phase. In 2021, West Bengal held elections in eight phases, while Assam voted in three. A substantial deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) is also expected to ensure security.

The contests across states are set to be closely fought. In West Bengal, the main battle is between Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress and the BJP. Tamil Nadu is expected to see a contest between the DMK-led alliance and the AIADMK-BJP combine, with Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) also drawing attention. In Assam, the BJP will face the Congress and regional parties, while in Kerala, the LDF will take on the UDF, with the BJP and its allies seeking to expand their presence. Puducherry is expected to witness a tight contest between the Congress-DMK-CPI alliance and the opposition bloc comprising the All India NR Congress, BJP and AIADMK.

With campaigning set to intensify and logistical preparations underway, the elections are being seen as a crucial political test, reflecting both regional dynamics and the broader strategies of national parties.
