Assembly Elections 2026 Live Updates: 'Are they trying to intimidate?', Mamata on heavy central force deployment for Bengal polls

Assembly Election 2026 Live Updates: Political parties will make a final push on Tuesday, the last day of campaigning in both Tamil Nadu and for the first phase of polling in West Bengal.

All 234 assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu and 152 of the 294 seats in West Bengal will vote on Thursday. The remaining 142 seats in West Bengal will go to polls on April 29.

Counting of votes in both states will be held on May 4.

In Tamil Nadu, the main contest is between the Secular Democratic Alliance led by the DMK and the National Democratic Alliance, led in the state by the AIADMK, the DMK’s arch-rival.

The two Dravidian rivals have dominated Tamil Nadu politics since the 1960s and have been the only parties to govern the state since then. While Congress is the DMK’s largest alliance partner, the BJP is the AIADMK’s key ally.

On the other hand, West Bengal will see a direct contest between the ruling TMC and the BJP. Led by chief minister Mamata Banerjee, its supremo, the TMC has been in power in the state since 2011, while the BJP emerged as its main challenger after winning 77 seats in the 2021 assembly elections, its best-ever performance in the state.

The Congress is largely out of the race and will contest alone, having broken its alliance with the Left Front in February.

'Women in West Bengal are not safe at all': Delhi CM Rekha Gupta slams Mamata
"As the voting date approaches, our belief grows stronger that every single resident of Bengal who was living in fear and oppression has decided to form a BJP government and when the results come on May 4th, it will bring respectable and fearless governance, with trustworthy and development-oriented politics," she said.

"Hooliganism is rampant in the state, and every woman is afraid to step out of her home. And even if she does, the CM questions her, whether it's the RG Kar case or any other incident. Even under a woman CM, women in the state are not safe at all. Corruption is rampant in the state... The mafia is involved in every sector here... The big question is: why should we vote for the TMC again?" she added.

Earlier, BJP candidate from Kharagpur Sadar Assembly constituency Dilip Ghosh exuded confidence on party victory in the West Bengal polls, stating that the ruling Trinamool Congress's "departure is ensured".

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Dilip Ghosh said, "The time has come for TMC to go... Now Mamata Banerjee has nothing in her hands. Their departure is ensured".

Yogi Adiyanath slams TMC in Bengal
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday slammed Congress, DMK, Trinamool Congress and Samawadi Party over their stance concerning Women's Reservation Amendment Bill and alleged that they have no agenda for the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes.

Addressing an election rally here, he said people will give reply to the opposition parties over their stance on the Women's Reservation Amendment Bill.

"Congress, TMC, and the INDI alliance ruled India for over 60 years. But they had no agenda for the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes. These people insult Baba Saheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar. They violated protocol during the President's visit to Bengal and insulted her. The people of India will not accept this," he said.

"The TMC, Congress, DMK, and SP all displayed the same behaviour during the recent Parliament session. You must have seen how these parties prevented the passage of the amendment to the Nari Shakti Vandan Act, which Prime Minister Modi wanted to implement in 2029. This demonstrates that insulting the tribal population, insulting the youth, insulting the farmers and insulting the poor has become their nature. But now the public has become aware. They will no longer accept governments engaged in this type of corruption and misconduct," he added.

'Victory is certain': Vijay on final campaign day ahead of Tamil Nadu polls
Vijay, chief of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), made a final appeal to voters ahead of the April 23 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, urging support for the party’s “Whistle” symbol. Addressing voters as his “own kin,” he thanked them for their support and alleged sustained pressure from political rivals, including Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Bharatiya Janata Party.

He projected TVK as a rising force rooted in social justice, backed by youth, women, and public support, while warning voters against being influenced by money power or divisive politics.

Making a direct appeal, he urged voters to turn out in large numbers and back TVK. “On April 23, I earnestly request you to come out with your families and vote for the ‘Whistle’ symbol. Let us create history. **Victory is certain**,” he said.

DMK MP Kanimozhi said the party has successfully countered what she described as the Centre’s attempts to “create confusion” and “intimidation” ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly polls.

“Certainly, we will form the government. I firmly believe that the DMK alliance will secure victory,” she said.

Meanwhile, chief minister MK Stalin held a morning walk campaign in Chennai’s Kannagi Nagar, drawing large crowds. He also criticised the Centre over the proposed delimitation exercise, calling it an attempt to “punish” progressive states like Tamil Nadu.

Bengal Election 2026 Live: Union minister Jitan Manjhi says 'job easy' for BJP in Bengal after oppn blocked women's quota bill
Union minister Jitan Ram Manjhi on Monday claimed that the opposition's stance on women's reservation has angered female voters, "making the job easy" for the BJP, which hopes to defeat the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal.

Manjhi, who heads the Hindustani Awam Morcha, a junior NDA partner in Bihar, made the remark while interacting with journalists in his parliamentary constituency Gaya.

"There is a lot of anger among women over the opposition's refusal to back the proposed amendment to the Women's Reservation Bill. Women are angry in Bihar and elsewhere. I think that the opposition has ended up making the job easy for the NDA (of which BJP is the largest constituent) in West Bengal", said the 80-year-old leader.

The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, which had sought to link women's reservation to delimitation of constituencies, fell in the Lok Sabha last week when it failed to get support of a two-third of total number of members.

Assembly Election Live Updates: Tuesday is the last day of campaigning for the assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, as well as in West Bengal, which will vote in an additional phase later. Polling for all 234 assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu and 152 of the 294 seats in West Bengal will be held on Thursday.

The second and final phase in West Bengal, covering the remaining 142 constituencies, is scheduled for April 29.

Counting of votes in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, and the Union Territory of Puducherry will be held on May 4. Assam (126 constituencies), Kerala (140) and Puducherry (30) went to polls on April 9.

The collapse of the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha ahead of the polls in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal is expected to play a significant role in the electoral outcomes in the two states. If passed, the legislation would have reserved 33% of seats for women in Parliament and state legislatures. However, the opposition blocked the Bill, alleging it was an attempt by the BJP-led central government to reduce the representation of southern states in Parliament, a charge the ruling party has denied.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP leaders have specifically targeted four opposition parties—Congress, DMK, TMC, and Samajwadi Party—for blocking the Bill. While the DMK is the ruling party in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal is governed by the TMC. The Samajwadi Party is the principal opposition in Uttar Pradesh, which is ruled by the BJP and is scheduled to hold assembly elections in February–March 2027.
