Gujarat Election Result Updates: BJP fielded 45 new faces by dropping sitting MLAs, 43 won

Gujarat Assembly election results 2022 live updates: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has not only defied 27 years of incumbency in Gujarat but also made history by winning the highest-ever number of seats, and significantly improving on its record for vote share. The Man of the Match was clearly Narendra Modi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded party workers in the state, saying each of them is a champion. "This historic win would never be possible without the exceptionally hard work of our Karyakartas, who are the real strength of our Party. People blessed the politics of development and at the same time expressed a desire that they want this momentum to continue at a greater pace. I bow to Gujarat's Jan Shakti" he said.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President JP Nadda thanked the public and party workers for the victory in Gujarat and said, "We have received 52.5 per cent vote share and 156 seats in Gujarat. This has happened because of the politics of development and welfare. It is also the result of an "irresponsible" opposition. The public has refused the politics of dynasties and corruption," said Nadda."

CM Bhupendra Patel is all set for his second term with the BJP planning to organize a grand swearing-in ceremony at the Gandhinagar assembly helipad ground on December 12. State BJP president C R Paatil said the ceremony will be held at 2pm. “Bhupendra Patel will continue as the CM,” he said.
PM Narendra Modi, home minister Amit Shah and a bevy of top BJP leaders will attend the swearing-in.

Meanwhile, the Congress hit rock bottom in Gujarat, settling for a dismal show of winning only 17 seats in the 182-member state assembly, baffled party leaders wondered whether the results could have been different had Rahul Gandhi campaigned in the state.

In 2017, when the Congress came very close to wresting Gujarat from the BJP, Rahul Gandhi had extensively toured the state, holding as many as 150 big and small public rallies during a 22-day campaign.

The 2017 performance of the party -- 77 seats out of 182 -- was the best since 1985, the year it had created a record by winning 149 seats, a record that the BJP surpassed on Thursday.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had contested Gujarat with an eye on becoming the key challenger to the BJP, managed five seats in the 182-member Gujarat assembly.

Spotlight on the politicians formerly known as the ‘Three Young Turks’
The spotlight will also be on the politicians formerly known as the ‘Three Young Turks’: Hardik Patel who had led the fight for the Patidar quota; Alpesh Thakor who had advocated the preservation of the OBC quota; and Jignesh Mevani, the champion of Dalit rights. Hardik’s electoral fortunes are being watched with much interest because he has made his electoral debut as a candidate of the BJP, a party he had vehemently derided in 2017.

Stakes higher for the new entrant, the AAP
The stakes are higher for the new entrant, the AAP. A 6% vote share will help it attain the status of a national party. More importantly, if the AAP gets a vote share of between 10% and 15% as most exit polls suggest, the Kejriwal-led party will get a place in Modi’s backyard. The AAP’s performance will also be a barometer of people’s response to its offer of freebies. The inducements included free power and a monthly fixed stipend for unemployed youth and women.
