Coronavirus Live Updates: Centre asks states to ensure availability of oxygen, functional ventilators
Covid news live updates: With some countries witnessing a surge in Covid cases, the Centre on Saturday urged states and union territories to ensure the availability of Liquid Medical Oxygen, adequate inventory of cylinders and functional life support equipment such as ventilators at hospitals to face any challenge. Meanwhile, Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya said RT-PCR test for the detection of Covid-19 would be made mandatory for international passengers arriving from China, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Thailand. Any passenger from these countries found symptomatic or testing positive for coronavirus would be quarantined, Mandaviya said. Stay with TOI for the latest developments

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 4,41,42,791, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.19 per cent.

Covid: Situation in Odisha 'stable', Govt advises people to use mask
With rising number of coronavirus cases in some countries, including China, the Odisha government on Friday issued a fresh advisory to citizens to follow Covid-19 appropriate behaviour, like wearing masks during Christmas and New Year. The advisory was issued after a high-level meeting was held on the prevailing Covid-19 situation.

Fighting Covid: Only 21% of population in Karnataka has taken precautionary jab
As on date, only around 21% of the eligible population in Karnataka has taken the precautionary vaccine dose and the government has set an ambitious target of taking this to 50% by January-end. As of 7. 30am on Friday, more than 1 crore healthcare workers (HCWs), frontline workers (FLWs) and citizens in the 18+ age group had received the precaution dose, as against a target of more than 4. 9 crore.

The government has called for those eligible to take booster shots of the Covid vaccines, but the data shows that less than a quarter of them have actually done so nationally and, in states like Jharkhand, Punjab and Haryana, not even one in 10 have. Health ministry data shows that in no state has the coverage of booster shots reached even 50% of the eligible population, though Telangana andAndhra Pradesh are close to that mark and Himachal Pradesh and Odisha have achieved over 40% coverage.

China shifts how it counts Covid deaths as crematoriums fill up
Facing growing scepticism that it is downplaying Covid deaths, the Chinese government defended the accuracy of its official tally by revealing it had updated its method of counting fatalities caused by the virus, reported CNN. According to the latest guidelines from the National Health Commission, only those whose death is caused by pneumonia and respiratory failure after contracting the virus are classified as Covid deaths, said Wang Guiqiang, a top infectious disease doctor.

90 lakh haven’t taken Covid booster shot in Mumbai
Although there is an increase in the daily uptake of Covid booster shot in Mumbai — from little over 100 five days back to over 1,000 on Friday — there seems to be inadequate Covid vaccine stocks in the city. The BMC has barely 6,000 doses of only one vaccine (Covaxin) and none of Covishield and Corbevax. Only a handful of private hospitals (where most of the adult population have to take the booster shot as the public sector only provides free booster shots to senior citizens) still offer vaccines.

India ahead of US, Europe in nasal vaccine strategy: Ella
India is ahead of the United States of America when it comes to nasal vaccines, founder chairman and managing director of Bharat Biotech Krishna Ella said on Friday, reports Nirupa Vatyam. “Everybody looked down on us when we said that we are working on a nasal vaccine. They questioned how a company in India can have a nasal vaccine when even America does not. We took the risk and made it happen. Today, we are ahead of the United States of America. We have even left Europe behind in the nasal vaccine strategy,” Ella further remarked.

Sudden cardiac arrest: ICMR to probe Covid link
The Indian Council of Medical Research is conducting a study to find out the reason behind a sudden rise in cardiac arrests and the role of Covid, if any.It will involve a review of the recent cases of sudden cardiac arrests reported from the country and verbal autopsy — a method of gathering information about symptoms and circumstances for a deceased person to determine their cause of death. Some of the top cardiolo-gists and forensic specialists from AIIMS have been roped in for the study, sources said.

Over 90% of Covid+ samples for genome sequencing are from large cities: Experts
More than 90% of the Covid positive samples representing the circulating variants in India and currently taken up for genome sequencing are primarily from large cities, according to experts attached to mapping and research laboratories. The decline in testing and Covid-positivity rates over several months meant that genome sequencing of positive samples drawn from international travellers and others to rule out the presence of newer variants remained largely focused on the big cities despite a general agreement on the need for genomic research in diverse populations.

India doing fine, Covid surge unlikely: Kang
In a series of tweets on Friday, virologist Gagandeep Kang said, “At the moment, India is doing fine. We have (only a) few cases, have had XBB & BF.7 for a while and they have not driven an upsurge in India. In the absence of an even more highly infectious variant, I do not expect a surge...Travel, wear a mask if you are worried (not China at the moment).”

37 million Covid cases in a day in China?
About 37 million people in China may have been infected with Covid on a single day this week, said estimates from its top health authority. The previous daily record was about 4 million, set in January in South Africa.

Ready to deal with Covid-19: West Bengal to Centre
West Bengal is alert and prepared to tackle any deterioration in the Covid-19 situation, Minister of State for Health Chandrima Bhattacharya told a national-level meeting on Friday. At the virtual meeting chaired by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, Bhattacharya said that West Bengal will be a part of the countrywide mock drill on December 27 to ensure the readiness of infrastructure with a specific focus on oxygen plants, ventilators, logistics and human resources.

Covid situation absolutely normal in Rajasthan: Govt
The positivity rate of coronavirus in Rajasthan has been only 0.1 per cent in the last few weeks and the situation is absolutely normal, a senior official of the health department said here on Friday. A review meeting of officials of the medical and health department was held here amidst new concerns regarding the corona infection.

The Omicron subvariant XBB accounts for 18.3% of the Covid-19 cases in the US for the week ended Dec. 24, up from 11.2% in the previous week.
The XBB variant has been driving up cases in parts of Asia, including Singapore, and some experts have said it is more transmissible but less severe.
