JNU live updates: Delhi Police take cognizance of social media post in which a poster reading 'Kashmir Azaad' was seen at a college protest

A day after Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar advised students to "make a new beginning and put the past behind," former finance minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Wednesday said that Kumar should follow his own advise and leave JNU. "The VC of JNU wants students to 'put the past behind'. He should follow his advice. He is the past. He should leave JNU," Chidambaram tweeted. Kumar on Tuesday termed January 5 violence as "unfortunate" and stated that violence is not a solution. He said that the administration will find every opportunity to make sure that normalcy returns to the University.

An office bearer of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad accepted on national television that two of the stick-yielding persons seen in videos on the attack in Jawaharlal Nehru University on January 5 were members of the RSS-affiliated student organisation. A video claiming the violence in Jawaharlal Nehru University on Sunday was triggered by leftist groups attacking ABVP activists proved hugely embarrassing for the RSS-affiliated student organisation on Monday when a fact check revealed that the attacker was actually an ABVP member. The video had retweeted by M Jagadesh Kumar, JNU vice-chancellor, saying the “video bears witness to #JNUVC@mamidala90’s statement that those opposing the registration for winter session of #JNU are behind violence to scuttle the academic process of varsity” (sic). Two days after the mayhem at JNU , Delhi Police has made little headway in investigations. No one has been detained for questioning, or arrested, despite multiple mobile clips and WhatsApp group exchanges that have thrown up the identities and affiliations of several people and point to a conspiracy. Now, police officials say they have failed to get any CCTV footage because the areas where the violence occurred are not covered by cameras. They are scanning footage from main gate cameras, but that may yield little as the goons are unlikely to have entered from there.
