Parliament Monsoon Session Live Updates: Rajya Sabha deputy chairman Harivansh meets President Murmu
The Monsoon Session of Parliament began on Monday, with the government expressing willingness to discuss issues of “national importance” — including Operation Sindoor and US President Donald Trump’s claim of brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
At a pre-session meeting with floor leaders, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the government was “open to discussion within rules and conventions.” However, there was no assurance on debating Bihar’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls, which the Opposition fears could disenfranchise marginalised communities.
Congress MPs Gaurav Gogoi and Pramod Tiwari pressed for debates on the Pahalgam terror attack, electoral reforms, and Trump’s ceasefire claim. Tiwari also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign tour during the session, accusing him of ignoring his responsibilities at home.
The government, meanwhile, is pushing ahead with its legislative agenda. Several key bills are lined up, including the Manipur GST (Amendment) Bill, the National Sports Governance Bill, and amendments to the Indian Institutes of Management Act. Reforms in taxation, anti-doping rules, and the shipping and mining sectors are also on the table.
The session, scheduled to continue until 21 August, is likely to see fierce exchanges between the government and the Opposition over national security, governance, and India’s foreign policy stance.

Parliament Monsoon Session Live: Harivansh chairs RS proceedings after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned
Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh presided over the morning session, following Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation due to health concerns the previous day.
The Vice President of India serves as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, with Dhankhar traditionally presiding over the day's initial proceedings.
On Monday evening, Dhankhar submitted his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu.
"To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution," he stated in his correspondence to the President.
Dhankhar, aged 74, had taken office in August 2022.

I appeal to you all to have a discussion on the issues of farmers. Both the House is adjourned till noon.

On Tuesday morning, Congress MP Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka submitted an adjournment motion notice in Lok Sabha regarding a Balasore student's tragic self-immolation, which occurred due to reported "mental harassment and failure of the institutional mechanisms to respond to her repeated complaints."
The notice, bearing Ulaka's signature, stated: "Allegedly the student had been facing persistent harassment and intimidation at the hands of certain faculty members and peers, and despite her written and verbal appeals to the authorities concerned, no timely or meaningful action was taken to address her grievances, pushing her to take the extreme step."
The Koraput Lok Sabha constituency representative highlighted how this incident has reverberated throughout the nation, revealing institutional indifference, insufficient accountability and inadequate grievance resolution systems in educational establishments.
The Congress MP characterised the Odisha student's death by self-immolation as a "serious failure of governance" and emphasised the necessity for the lower house to address this matter promptly to establish concrete preventive measures against similar incidents.
