Parliament Winter Session 2024 Live Updates: Special debate on Constitution will begin in Lok Sabha tomorrow at 12 noon
The Lok Sabha on Wednesday was repeatedly adjourned following a heated exchange triggered by remarks made by TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee against Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. Despite Banerjee's apology, the uproar continued, leading the Chair to adjourn the House for the day.
The trouble began when Banerjee, speaking during a discussion on amendments to the Disaster Management Act, accused the central government of non-cooperation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai swiftly countered, stating that it was Prime Minister Narendra Modi who had supported all states and effectively managed the crisis by taking a collaborative approach.
Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day on Wednesday afternoon without conducting any business, following a standoff between the treasury and opposition benches over the no-confidence motion against the House Chairman and the George Soros issue. When the House reconvened at noon after an initial adjournment, Leader of the House JP Nadda accused the Congress of aligning with billionaire investor George Soros in an effort to destabilize the country, and called for a discussion on the matter.

Levelling these kinds of allegations is condemnable...This is very unfortunate. Mallikarjun Kharge has been given adequate opportunities to speak in the parliament but on record has said that he will not speak. He was also invited into the chamber to speak but he refused. Trinamool Congress, which is part of the INDIA bloc, has decided to move a privilege motion against Union parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju in Rajya Sabha, for making derogatory remarks against opposition members, said TMC sources.
With Rijiu attacking the opposition for moving a notice on Tuesday seeking removal of Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar for his conduct as Chairman of the Upper House, the opposition parties, including Trinamool Congress, have accused Rijiju of making “derogatory remarks” against their MPs.
Without specifying the exact language that Rijiju used, Trinamool Congress sources said it is inappropriate behaviour and especially so when it comes from the Union parliamentary affairs minister, who is expected to coordinate with members across party lines, among other things for the smooth functioning of the government.
Trinamool members are likely to move the privilege motion in the Upper House on Thursday. With relations between the treasury benches and the opposition getting bitter during the Parliament’s winter session, the privilege motion could further impact the interaction between the two sides in both the Houses.

Shamika Ravi, a principal economic adviser to PM Narendra Modi, has refuted allegations made by a senior Congress official regarding her purported funding from George Soros's Open Society Foundation, stating that the claims are "entirely incorrect."
"In 2006-07 The Open Society Funded Indian School of Business (for work on financial inclusion) — where I was an assistant professor teaching and researching on the topic. No money comes directly to any faculty member," she said.
"18 years later, I joined the EAC-PM. I have never been more proud of my work, my nation, or my Prime Minister. Meanwhile in 2020, George Soros declares his anti-India designs and guess who swarm towards him?!" she added.
