NEW DELHI: In Sagar, BJP’s Sumanta Mandal secured a close victory, polling 1,27,802 votes and defeating Trinamool Congress candidate Bankim Chandra Hazra by a margin of 7,881 votes. The contest remained tight through the counting process, with Mandal edging ahead in the final stages. Hazra put up a strong fight with 1,19,921 votes but ultimately finished second in the constituency.
Sagar is an assembly constituency located in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district. It is one of the seven Assembly segments that fall under the Mathurapur (SC) Lok Sabha constituency. The seat is part of the state’s 294 assembly constituencies and has seen electoral contests among major political parties.
At present, Bankim Chandra Hazra of the
All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) is the sitting MLA from Sagar. He won the seat in the 2021 assembly election by securing 53.96% of the total votes polled. He was followed by the
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Bikash Kamila, who received 41.48% of the votes.

Bankim Chandra Hazra has held the constituency for multiple consecutive terms, having also won the seat in the 2016 and 2011 assembly elections as an AITC candidate.
The election history shows that Sagar has remained under AITC’s control for several consecutive elections, reflecting consistent voter support for the party in the constituency.
