TVK Vijay rally Stampede Live: Vijay receives bomb threat; bomb squad arrives for search at his residence
In a major tragedy, a stampede broke out during actor and TVK chief Vijay’s rally in Karur on Saturday, leaving at least 40 people dead, including 16 women and six children.
President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President and Tamil Nadu native C.P. Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Governor R.N. Ravi, and Leader of Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami were among those who condoled the deaths and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
Chief Minister Stalin, who will meet the injured on Sunday, announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh for the family of each victim.
Vijay, who launched TVK in February last year, began his campaign for next year’s Tamil Nadu assembly polls in Trichy on September 13.
After kicking off his campaign in Trichy, Vijay held the Karur rally, where the stampede occurred.

Thirty one people died in a stampede in TVK leader Vijay’s campaign in Karur on Saturday evening. The deceased included six children and 16 women, said Tamil Nadu health minister Ma Subramanian. He said more than 40 people were under treatment.
