After visiting the Government Medical College and Hospital, retired high court judge Aruna Jagadeesan, appointed by the state government for a detailed inquiry into the Karur stampede, says, "All are fine in the hospital now. They are getting very good treatment..."

DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi visited the Government Medical College and met the victims of the Karur stampede.

Following her visit to the hospital, she emphasised that all political parties must adhere to specific conditions when holding political rallies. She also announced that members of her party have extended their support to the victims.

"The chief minister has ensured that the district missionary and the party missionary are here to support... Even if the prime minister or the chief minister comes for a political rally, the party has to follow certain conditions. There's no one above it..." Kanimozhi told reporters.

She further mentioned that a commission has been appointed by the chief minister, MK Stalin, on the Karur stampede. "A one-woman commission has been appointed by the CM in this matter... Let her report come out..." added Kanimozhi. (ANI)

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) Chief Sunny Joseph said the stampede tragedy in the political rally organised by TVK chief Vijay in Karur is a "lesson" to both people and politicians.

As many as 40 people including women and children had been killed in the fatal rally organised by the actor-turned-politician in Karur in neighbouring Tamil Nadu on Saturday night.

When reporters asked about the shocking incident, Joseph said it was an incident which make people realise about the strength of the experience of political workers and their connection with common people.

"The pain is so deep. But, there are some lessons we learn even amidst that pain. People and others should realise this. It is a lesson to the political workers as well," the KPCC chief added. (PTI)

"The commission has been set up to address shortcomings. Incidents like this should not occur in the future, and the necessary remedial measures will be taken."

Vice President C P Radhakrishnan, a Tamil Nadu native, said he felt "very sad" over the Karur stampede, which left at least 40 people dead, and urged citizens to "control their emotions" when there was a big crowd.

He was talking to reporters in Patna on the sidelines of the valedictory function of "Unmesha International Literature Festival", which began with a two-minute silence to express grief over the tragedy.

When the vice president was asked about the stampede at Karur, where a large crowd had gathered to attend a rally of actor-turned-politician Vijay, he replied, "This is very unfortunate, so many young people have died, I feel very sad."

Radhakrishnan added, "It is my humble request to the people that they control their emotions when there is a big crowd. A similar incident had taken place in Bengaluru after a cricket match. I hope these things never happen again." (PTI)

TVK president Vijay announced a financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh to the families of those who lost their lives at a stampede during his party's rally in Karur on September 27.

He also said Rs 2 lakh would be given to those who sustained injuries.

The actor-politician said he was deeply anguished over the incident, which claimed more than 30 lives and left many others injured.

The toll in the stampede here rose to 40 after a man succumbed to injuries at the government hospital, a health official said on Sunday, news agency PTI reported.

Vijay arrived only at 7.40pm. As he entered the venue, large numbers of cadres followed his vehicle, merged with the crowd already present, leading to a sudden surge, the DGP said.

Witnesses gave varying accounts of what triggered the stampede. Many said a disturbance erupted as soon as Vijay began his speech.

In addition to local Chennai city police, CRPF personnel were deployed around his home to prevent any untoward incidents.

Early morning walkers and residents heading out for milk and essentials were stunned as they crossed the venue of the mega rally—an arterial road—addressed the previous night by TVK chief Vijay. Many could hardly comprehend the tragedy that had unfolded.

I pray to God that all our loved ones who are injured and undergoing treatment recover swiftly and return home. I also assure you that our Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam will steadfastly provide all necessary support to our loved ones under treatment. By the grace of God, let us strive to recover from all this."

A case has been registered by the Karur police against TVK leaders and functionaries, including Bussy N Anand (general secretary), C T Nirmal Kumar (joint general secretary), and TVK Karur north district secretary Mathiazhagan, for last night's stampede in Karur in which 39 died.
