Tamil Nadu CM Announcement Live Updates: BJP says it will not support any party to form govt in Tamil Nadu

Amid the ongoing political tussle over government formation in Tamil Nadu, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay has sought an appointment with Governor RN Ravi on Friday evening.

At the same time, TVK leader CTR Nirmal Kumar arrived at the Communist Party of India headquarters, Balan Illam, where the CPI is holding an executive committee meeting to decide its stand on extending support to the Vijay-led party.

Following the fractured verdict in the April 23 Assembly elections, Vijay has been trying to rally support from other parties to stake claim to form the government.

The TVK emerged as the single largest party but remained short of the majority mark of 118 seats in the 234-member Assembly.

The party has since intensified talks with potential allies, including the Congress, which has already extended conditional support after breaking ties with the DMK.

With the backing of five Congress MLAs, the TVK-led camp’s tally has risen to 112, still six seats short of the halfway mark needed to form the government.

Governor Arlekar had on Thursday invited Vijay to Lok Bhavan and informed him that the requisite majority support required to form the government had not yet been established.

According to sources, the Governor sought clarity on the “magic number” needed for government formation and asked Vijay to provide details of legislators backing TVK’s claim.

The Governor’s refusal to immediately invite Vijay to form the government has triggered sharp criticism from TVK leaders and supporters, many of whom accused Arlekar of acting at the behest of the BJP to delay constitutional procedure.

Amid the political deadlock, TVK Joint General Secretary CTR Nirmal Kumar, along with party leaders, met leaders of the Communist Party of India at the CPI office in Chennai on Thursday to seek support for government formation.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Nirmal Kumar said both the CPI and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi would hold internal discussions on extending support to TVK and announce their decisions later.

Both CPI and VCK secured two seats each in the Assembly elections.

Tamil Nadu CM Announcement: Congress accuses Governor of ‘buying time’ in Tamil Nadu
The Congress has launched a sharp attack on Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar over the delay in inviting Vijay’s TVK to form the government. Senior leader Kapil Sibal accused the Governor of acting politically rather than constitutionally, saying, “I was hoping that by now the governor would have invited TVK… When governors become agents of the BJP, they do the bidding of the BJP.” The remarks reflect growing tensions as alliance arithmetic remains unresolved.

Tamil Nadu Government Formation: Vijay’s TVK scramble for numbers
Tamil Nadu’s post-election drama has entered a constitutional grey zone, with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar declining to immediately invite Vijay’s TVK to form the government, citing the lack of an “established” majority. TVK, with 108 seats, and Congress, with five, remain short of the 118-seat mark required in the 234-member Assembly. Sources said the Governor sought clarity on the “magic number” and asked Vijay to furnish proof of support from legislators before proceeding.

Tamil Nadu Government Formation: Congress MP Manickam Tagore on DMK's allegations

On DMK's allegations, Congress MP Manickam Tagore said, "They lost the election, and as a result, we also lost... They won and held power at times, so, it is not the case that they are suffering only because of us... It is unfortunate that DMK spokespersons are using such terms... They should remember that in 2011, even after the defeat, we supported them. But they left us and contested the local body elections in 2011. In 2013, they exited the UPA government... Who then backstabbed us?... In 2016, we all realised that without Congress, they couldn’t win. That’s why an alliance was formed, resulting in about 95 seats or so... Congress party has sacrificed much for the sake of our friendship..."

"We too lost our seats.... The irresponsible spokespersons of DMK need to be mindful of their language and refrain from speaking in such a manner... In Tamil Nadu, there are two main secular spaces. We respect DMK’s secular credentials..."

Tamil Nadu CM Announcement: Mandate at stake: Governor Arlekar cites 'unestablished majority' as TVK-Congress falls 5 seats short; Congress slams BJP 'interference'

Following the 2026 Assembly Election results, Tamil Nadu is gripped by a constitutional stalemate that pits a cinematic superstar's political debut against the traditional gatekeepers of power.
The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Vijay, emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, shattering the decades-old DMK-AIADMK duopoly. However, even with the Congress's five seats, the nascent alliance sits at 113, exactly five seats shy of the 118-seat magic number in the 234-member house

Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Thursday invited TVK's Vijay to Lok Bhavan, and explained that the requisite majority support in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, essential for forming the Government, has not been established.

According to sources, the Governor sought clarity on the "magic number" required for government formation and asked Vijay to furnish details of legislators backing TVK's claim to form the government in Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu CM Announcement: DMK support for AIADMK govt? Stalin to take a call

The unthinkable in Tamil Nadu politics turned probable on Thursday when DMK president M K Stalin reportedly told his party MLAs that AIADMK had been seeking his support to form the govt and checkmate TVK president C Joseph Vijay from becoming chief minister.

The legislators left the decision to Stalin, multiple sources told TOI. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, meanwhile, is understood to have sought governor R V Arlekar’s appointment on Friday.

Hours before the DMK legislators’ meeting, Stalin was closeted with leaders of VCK, CPI and CPM, whose six MLAs (two each) can fill the five-seat gap that the TVK-Congress combine should fill to cross the 118-mark. The topic of AIADMK outreach came up in this meeting, too, and the DMK allies told Stalin they would convey their decision on Friday.

Earlier on Thursday, governor R V Arlekar had told TVK that it was yet to show the support of majority of MLAs to form the govt. TVK is the single largest party with 108 legislators, while DMK has 59 and AIADMK 47 MLAs in the 234-member assembly.
Two independent sources told TOI that the talks started with AIADMK general secretary calling up DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin on May 4 evening when TVK emerged winner.

Tamil Nadu Government Formation: CPM says TVK should be allowed to form govt
CPM state secretary TT Shanmugam said, "According to the Constitution, it is TVK that should be allowed to form the government. We have never seen a situation like this in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, and now we have a hung Assembly. It is the Governor who should invite Vijay to form the government because he is leading. So, the Governor is now saying that there is a High Court order, which is not right. We have a general body meeting of the party tomorrow, and following that, we will decide within two days on our stance on whether we are going to support Vijay or not. We met Stalin, considering the relationship we share, and spoke to him about the current election scenario. We also told him that the Governor should call only TVK and let Vijay take the oath as chief minister.”

Tamil Nadu CM Announcement: DMK allies too to discuss tie-up

The DMK legislature party passed four resolutions, including the one that described as “critical and complex” the situation where no party has got a clear majority. The state is not prepared for another election, it noted. The meeting authorised Stalin to “analyse the situation and take immediate and urgent decisions”.

Leaders of DMK allies other than Congress, which moved to TVK’s side on Wednesday, have been meeting Stalin for three days. “In Thursday’s meeting, the topic of social media being abuzz with DMK-AIADMK talks came up,” said a source. “The allies said it would be taken into account during their respective party meetings on Friday to decide on the future course of action,” said an alliance party leader.

Asked about the possibility of VCK approving a DMK-AIADMK understanding, a senior VCK leader said: “When there is a threat in the name of TVK, why should AIADMK and DMK not join hands to provide a stable govt?” AIADMK legislators continued to be holed up in a resort in Puducherry for the second day. AIADMK’s allies PMK (four seats), AMMK and BJP (one each) have been lying low

Tamil Nadu CM Announcement: 'Sticking to safest points of law', says actor Kasthuri Shankar on Tamil Nadu Governor asking TVK to prove majority

Actor Kasthuri Shankar on Thursday said that Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar was "sticking to the safest points of the law" for asking TVK to prove support from the majority in the Assembly.

Speaking with ANI, the actor lauded Vijay's resounding victory in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, calling it a "vote against the misrule." He further defended the Governor's move, while stating that no party wants to go for a re-election in Tamil Nadu.

"Congratulations to Vijay and the TVK for this resounding mandate that the people of Tamil Nadu have given him. It is not just a vote for Vijay, it's also a vote against the misrule... I think the governor is sticking to the safest points of the law and the safest elements of the Constitution. Nobody wants another election to happen in Tamil Nadu, including the DMK, AIADMK and anybody who lost, including the Congress," she said.

Her remarks come after Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, earlier today, said that TVK does not have the required majority support in the state Assembly to form the government.

As per the official release by Lok Bhavan, Tamil Nadu, "Thiru Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Hon'ble Governor of Tamil Nadu, has invited Thiru C. Joseph Vijay. President, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, (May 7) to Lok Bhavan, Chennai."

Tamil Nadu CM announcement: Politically immoral of Congress to jump to TVK’s side, says DMK

“You called Union minister Ravneet Singh Bittu a traitor because he had crossed over to BJP from Congress. Now consider this. You called M K Stalin on Tuesday afternoon and said, ‘I am with you’. The next morning, you defected from the alliance and jumped to the side you had contested against. Rahul Gandhi ji, we just want to know what you would like to be described as?” said a senior DMK MP, reflecting the anger in the Dravidian outfit’s ranks over Congress’ dramatic switch to Tamil star Vijay after his TVK emerged as the single largest party at the cost of DMK and AIADMK.

Tamil Nadu CM Announcement: AIADMK's Shanmugam reigns from Rajya Sabha amid deputy CM buzz
In a significant political development, AIADMK leader C V Shanmugam has resigned from his Rajya Sabha seat. The former minister confirmed the move in the national capital on Thursday, shortly after submitting his resignation to the competent authority.

"I have sent my resignation. I have resigned from my position. Thank you," he told reporters, declining to elaborate. The resignation has triggered intense speculation regarding shifting alliances in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. Amid rumours of a potential tie-up between the AIADMK and the Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), or even a realignment with the DMK, Shanmugam maintained a strict distance from the conjectures.

Responding to queries about a "new government" or specific alliance speculations, he said, "I can’t say anything. I don't know anything.” Shanmugam, an influential leader from Vanniyar-dominated Villupuram, had been serving his term in the Upper House since 2022.

Tamil Nadu govt formation: Palaniswami asks AIADMK MLAs to remain 'united and patient'
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Thursday held a meeting with the newly elected MLAs from Tamil Nadu at a private resort near Ariyankuppam on the outskirts of Puducherry. Nearly 40 legislators were present at the meeting, which lasted nearly one hour.

Party sources said that Palaniswami asked the MLAs-elect to remain united and be patient. "Good things will emerge and hence you should all remain united and patient in the resort in the next couple of days," he told the MLAs.

The development comes amid TVK's attempts to secure a majority in the 234-member strong Tamil Nadu Assembly. The Congress party, which has 5 MLAs, has already extended support to the TVK. In the TN Assembly election, the TVK has won 108 seats, the DMK 59, AIADMK 47, Congress 5, PMK 4, IUML 2, CPI 2, CPI-M 2, and the VCK 2.

The BJP, DMDK and AMMK have got 1 seat each. TVK is five short of the required 118 MLAs to form its first government in Tamil Nadu. Puducherry AIADMK state secretary and lone MLA A Anbalagan, along with party functionaries received Palaniswami at the resort.

'Invite TVK to form govt': CPM gen secy MA Baby to Tamil Nadu governor
CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby on Thursday called upon Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to uphold democratic conventions by inviting the TVK to form the government as it was the single largest party in a fractured assembly.

Speaking on the political impasse in Tamil Nadu, the CPI (M) top leader argued that in the absence of a clear majority or a pre-poll alliance reaching the magic number, constitutional precedent dictates that the leader of the largest party be sworn in. He cited the 1996 invitation to BJP stalwart Atal Bihari Vajpayee as a historical parallel.

"The governor's office should be beyond suspicion," Baby told PTI Videos, questioning the delay in the invitation and demanding that Vijay be given reasonable time to prove his majority on the floor of the House. Addressing the CPI(M)'s own position, Baby admitted that their alliance with the DMK was defeated. He noted that the party leadership would meet in Chennai to discuss their future course of action in this "peculiar situation."

What DMK resolution condemning Congress 'betrayal' said
"This shows that the Congress party has not changed its old character. The Congress was allotted one Rajya Sabha seat and 28 assembly seats in our alliance. It shifted to an alternative party within three days, risking the victory achieved through the hard work of its coalition members," the resolution said. Even during the seat-sharing negotiations, the Congress did not rein in those expressing views against the alliance; and in Puducherry elections, the Congress party candidates contested in the constituencies allotted to the DMK. In other words, the Congress party did not conduct itself honestly even during the election. The Congress has committed a great betrayal by stabbing our party leader in the back, not even coming in person to thank him for the victory. But he (Stalin) showed tolerance and acted with generosity and responsibility."

'Extremely unconstitutional': Sanjay Raut on Tamil Nadu governor not inviting Vijay to form govt
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut on Thursday said Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar not inviting TVK chief Vijay to form the new government in the southern state despite his party winning the maximum seats is an "extremely unconstitutional" stand.

Talking to reporters in Nashik in north Maharashtra, the Rajya Sabha MP said a strange political situation has arisen in Tamil Nadu, where the recent elections threw up a hung Assembly.

Actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has emerged as the largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member House, falling short of the simple majority mark of 118.

The Opposition AIADMK won 47 seats, while its allies the PMK obtained four and the BJP and AMMK clinched one seat each, respectively. The DMK finished with 59 seats, while its allies Congress managed to win five seats followed by IUML, CPI, CPI (M) and VCK (2 each) and DMDK (1).

"The Governor's stand is extremely unconstitutional," Raut told reporters.

The Congress has won five seats, while the PMK has bagged four and if both parties back Vijay then there is a possibility of the TVK forming the next government, said the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader.

"But BJP's Governor Rajendra Arelkar has taken a tough stand. Despite the TVK emerging as the single largest party, it has not been invited to form government. The TVK is a party with 108 seats. If you are not going to invite him (Vijay) for government formation, then you are hollow and liar," he maintained.

Despite providing the list of 112 supporting MLAs, including those of the Congress, to the governor, Arlekar is yet to invite the actor-politician to form the government.

Usually, the Governor is expected to invite the leader whose party has secured the highest number of seats in the Assembly elections; however, in this instance, he is asking Mr Vijay to demonstrate the requisite majority of 118 seats needed to form the government. This is not fair. The TVK President has secured the support of the Congress. It is solely because of this development that the BJP and the Central Government are interfering in this matter, exerting pressure on him. Tamil Nadu CM race: DMK passes resolutions, slams Congress

DMK passes several resolutions in its legislature party meeting today.

Resolution 1: Thanks to the People of Tamil Nadu and Alliance Partners.

Resolution 2: Gratitude to Party President MK Stalin for his decades of dedication to the party and Tamil Nadu.

Resolution 3: Authorising MK Stalin to take political decisions. The resolution stated that Tamil Nadu was not prepared for another election and emphasised the need for a stable government in the state. It also stressed that forces opposed to the principles of the Dravidian movement should not be allowed to gain space. In view of the prevailing political and administrative circumstances, the meeting unanimously authorised DMK president M. K. Stalin to take immediate and necessary political decisions.

Resolution 4: The meeting strongly condemned the decision of the Congress to move away from the Secular Progressive Alliance, stating that the party had failed to change its “old political character”. The resolution said the Congress had secured one Rajya Sabha seat and 28 Assembly constituencies as part of the DMK-led alliance, and accused the party of shifting towards an alternative front within days by jeopardising the victory achieved through the hard work of alliance cadres.

Tamil Nadu CM race: 'Governor bowing before BJP, not Constitution,' says Congress state in-charge
Tamil Nadu Congress in-charge Girish Chodankar, on Thursday alleged that the Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar was "bowing" to the BJP rather than to the Constitution.

He claimed that the Governor had a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) background and was acting under the directives from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah over his constitutional obligations to the people of the state.

Addressing reporters, Chodankar said, "Due to his RSS background and the pressure from Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, I feel that the Governor is bowing before the BJP rather than before the Constitution and the people of Tamil Nadu. This is not right. The Governor does not have the option to ask them to prove their majority at the Raj Bhavan. The Constitution is very clear. The Governor must respect the mandate given by the people of Tamil Nadu."

Chodankar argued that the Governor has no "option" other than inviting Vijay to take oath as CM, questioning why a majority has to be proven to Arlekar rather than the legislative floor.

Makkal Needhi Maiyam (MNM) president and Rajya Sabha MP Kamal Haasan on Thursday said that not inviting Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay to form the government in Tamil Nadu would amount to "disrespecting the mandate" of the people.

In a post on X, Haasan said the assembly election verdict had produced an unprecedented situation in Tamil Nadu, where no single party had secured a majority on its own.

"In the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections, the people have not granted any single party the authority to form a government independently. This outcome is unprecedented in the history of Tamil Nadu," Haasan said.

Referring to outgoing chief minister MK Stalin, Haasan praised his response to the election verdict. "My brother, Mr. MK Stalin, has announced, 'We respect the people's verdict; we will function as a responsible opposition.' I respect his political maturity," he said.

Haasan asserted that constitutional authorities must now uphold democratic principles by allowing the single-largest party to stake a claim to form the government.

Tamil Nadu govt formation: 'Governor told Vijay majority for govt not established,' says Lok Bhavan
Tamil Nadu Lok Bhavan on Thursday said Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar explained to TVK chief Vijay that his party does not have requisite support to form the government.

In a span of 24 hours, Vijay had met the governor for the second time on Thursday over government formation.

Congress move aimed at blocking BJP's expansion in Tamil Nadu: RS MP Christopher Tilak
Congress Rajya Sabha MP Christopher Tilak addressed reporters at the Trichy airport and said he was travelling to Chennai with the hope that clarity would emerge within the next two days regarding the formation of the new government.

He said discussions would be held with party functionaries on the Assembly election victory and on what the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) intends to do next. He expressed confidence that a new government could assume office within the next 10 days.

Claiming that TVK secured 35 per cent of the votes while the DMK obtained 30 per cent, he said the verdict reflected the people's opposition to the BJP and showed that voters did not want the BJP to gain a foothold in Tamil Nadu.

Tilak said the present political arrangement was formed with secularism as its core principle and that the Congress party had taken its decision to ensure that this secular framework remains intact. He added that TVK leader Vijay should continue to speak strongly against the BJP and in support of secular values.

He said that despite Congress having only five MLAs, the party had taken its stand keeping in mind the condition of Tamil Nadu and the need to protect secularism.

Earlier in the day, Vijay met Governor Arlekar at Lok Bhavan for the second consecutive day amid continuing political uncertainty in the state. Senior TVK leaders accompanied him during the meeting.

Tamil Nadu CM race: We received request; will decide soon whether to support TVK, says VCK's Thirumavalavan
VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan on Thursday said that his party received a request from TVK for support and the high-level committee of his party will decide whether to support the Vijay-led party to form the government.

The TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly and emerged as the single largest party. Vijay will have to resign from one of the two constituencies he has won.

Though the Congress party, which has five MLAs, has extended support to TVK, the actor-politician-led party was still short of as many seats to touch the magic number of 118, the majority mark in the 234-member House.

"We received the request letter from TVK. We are thankful for that. We have not ignored his (Vijay's) request. We have a procedure. Therefore, our party's high-level committee will decide soon. We are going to discuss the merits and demerits of our position," the VCK leader told reporters here.

With regard to the delay in the governor's call to the TVK, which is the single largest party, to form the government, Thirumavalavan requested the governor to invite Vijay to form the government. "It is a constitutional right and people's verdict," he added.

'Stopping a Govt voted by people is a crime': Manickam Tagore backs TVK's claim to form government, calls Vijay 'symbol of hope'
Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Thursday strongly backed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay in his bid to form the next government in Tamil Nadu, alleging that attempts were being made to block the actor-turned-politician despite the people voting for "change and hope" in the Assembly elections.

Speaking to ANI, Tagore said the mandate in Tamil Nadu clearly reflected public support for Vijay's leadership and asserted that the Governor should immediately invite TVK to form the government and allow it to prove its majority on the floor of the House.

"We all know that in Tamil Nadu, people have voted for change. People have voted for a new leader, 108 members have been elected from that party," Tagore said.

He pointed out that with the support of Congress's five MLAs, TVK's tally had reached 113, only a few seats short of the majority mark in the 234-member Assembly.

"Halfway mark is 118. The Governor is of the BJP because he is a former BJP man and we all know that he has the BJP's mindset and Delhi's mindset is not to make Mr Vijay Chief Minister. Delhi don't want Vijay to be the Chief Minister," he alleged.

Tamil Nadu CM race: CPI urges governor to give an opportunity to TVK to prove its majority on the floor of the assembly
M Veerapandian, Communist Party of India (CPI) Tamil Nadu State Secretary, released a press statement urging the Governor to give an opportunity to TVK to prove its majority on the floor of the assembly.

"In the 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election held on April 23 in Tamil Nadu, voters did not deliver a clear mandate enabling any single party to independently form the government. However, the electorate has given Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam 108 seats, making it the single largest party in the assembly. Based on this, TVK leader Vijay has met the Governor and staked claim to form the government. It is not appropriate for the Governor to insist that TVK prove its majority before the swearing-in ceremony. As the single largest party, TVK must be given an opportunity by the governor, in accordance with the Constitution, to prove its majority on the floor of the assembly," it said.

'Post-poll alliances come later, single-largest party TVK should form government first', says DMK's Saravanan Annadura
Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai on Thursday said that the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), being the single-largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, should be given the first opportunity to form the government in the state.

Speaking to ANI here, Annadurai said constitutional convention and democratic principle favour inviting the single-largest party when no pre-poll alliance secures a majority.

"If there are no pre-poll alliances which would have garnered the majority, then he should go with the single largest party. If the single largest party is not able to garner the majority, then it should go towards the electoral polls with whomever they want. And, if there are going to be any post-poll alliances, then that also will come in fourth place," he said.

Referring to the current political situation in Tamil Nadu, the DMK leader said no alliance had secured a clear majority and no other formation had staked a claim to form the government.

"Now, in the state of Tamil Nadu, no pre-poll alliance has the majority. Nobody else has staked a claim to form the government. But the single largest party, Mr Vijay's TVK, has staked a claim to form the government and met the governor. And they have given the support of 113 MLAs," he said.

Meanwhile, Vijay arrived at the Lok Bhavan to meet Tamil Nadu governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar in Chennai.

'Vijay will surely become the CM of Tamil Nadu,' says TVK leader Ganeshan
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) Fisheries Wing District Secretary Ganeshan on Thursday expressed confidence that the party would form the government in the state under the leadership of actor-turned-politician Vijay.

Speaking to ANI, Ganeshan said, "The Vijay wave has swept across Tamil Nadu, from Chennai to Kanyakumari. Political leaders across parties spoke about the rise of TVK but doubted its win. Today, the people have given their verdict by giving 108 seats to TVK."

"We are extremely confident that TVK will form the government. Our leader Vijay will surely become the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, and he will be the CM forever," he added.

Earlier, the security cover deployed outside TVK president Vijay's residence in Chennai Nilankarai had been withdrawn by the Tamil Nadu Police.

Police personnel were seen removing checkpoint sector machines and barricades from outside the residence. The police presence outside the house was also reduced, and convoy vehicles stationed outside the residence were no longer seen.

TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member assembly and is ten short of the majority mark. With Vijay also to step down from one of the two seats he won in the assembly polls, the effective strength of TVK in the assembly will become 107.

Tamil Nadu CM race: TVK chief Vijay arrives at Lok Bhavan to meet Governor Arlekar for second round meeting
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay on Thursday arrived at the Lok Bhavan to meet Tamil Nadu governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar in Chennai.
Other top leadership of TVK has accompanied Vijay to meet Governor Arlekar.

The second round of meetings between Vijay and Tamil Nadu governor comes a day after when the TVK chief staked a claim to form government in the state. The development took place after the Tamil Nadu Congress confirmed its post-poll alliance with TVK.

Following Congress' support to TVK, the number for Vijay rose from 108 to 113, which is still five short from the halfway mark in the 234 member Tamil Nadu assembly.

However, amidst the ongoing political developments in Tamil Nadu, the TVK has accomodated its MLAs in a private luxury resort in Mammallapuram.

The convoy police security provided yesterday to TVK president Vijay was suddenly withdrawn. It is also being reported that the swearing-in ceremony, which Vijay was expected to hold today after meeting the Governor, has been cancelled.

Around 70 MLAs are currently staying at the Poonjery Four Points Sheraton Hotel in Mamallapuram, where only Vijay's private bouncers are engaged in providing security.

TVK stunned the 'Dravidian' parties in the State, bringing to an end the DMK-AIADMK three- decade-old 'duopoly'.

Tamil Nadu CM race: DMK’s fresh faces fare poorly in central TN
DMK won 31 seats in the 2021 assembly election in the central region, but it has managed to win only 17 seats this time, though a large chunk of the party’s seats have come from the districts in Trichy, What is notable is that DMK lost seven seats where sitting MLAs were replaced with new faces. It managed to win only one seat (Kulithalai) where a new candidate replaced the incumbent.

Among the seats lost with fresh faces are Srirangam, Lalgudi, Musiri, and Thuraiyur in Trichy district. Thuraiyur, a reserved seat held by DMK MLA Stalin Kumar, was ceded to Congress in 2026.

The national party lost the contest to TVK and was pushed to third spot. In Lalgudi, four-time MLA A Soundarapandian was denied a ticket and was replaced by newcomer T Parivallal, who finished third behind AIADMK’s Leema Rose and TVK’s Ku Pa Krishnan.

DMK can find some solace that two fresh faces, S Durairaj and S Karunairaja, who contested in Srirangam and Musiri respectively, finished second behind TVK. “In one booth in Srirangam, the DMK candidate secured only five votes. The party’s field workers felt that better candidates could have won both Srirangam and Lalgudi,” a DMK functionary said.

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief C Joseph Vijay has emerged at the centre of Tamil Nadu politics after his party became the single largest force in the 2026 Assembly elections with 108 seats. However, TVK remains short of the majority mark needed to form the government, triggering intense negotiations with multiple parties.

Congress has extended support to Vijay, but the numbers are still insufficient after accounting for one seat Vijay is expected to vacate. The AIADMK initially explored offering unconditional support to TVK, but later withdrew the proposal after talks reportedly stalled.

Vijay has met Tamil Nadu governor Arlekar and staked claim to form the government, though the governor is understood to have sought formal letters of support before proceeding.

The decisions of smaller parties such as VCK, CPI and CPM are now critical to TVK’s prospects. Meanwhile, outgoing chief minister MK Stalin said the DMK would “watch without disturbing for six months” while remaining in opposition.
