UP Lok Sabha election results 2019 Highlights: Looking forward to serving Varanasi's people, says PM Modi

A saffron wave had swept Uttar Pradesh in 2014 when the BJP and allies won an unprecedented 73 out of the 80 seats in the state. However, the contest seems more evenly poised this time with rivals SP, BSP and RLD joining hands to defy the Modi juggernaut. Can a united fight by the Mahagathbandhan translate into rich electoral dividends or will the BJP come close to, or even breach, its 2014 tally? Stay tuned for TOI's counting day coverage to find out.

Jaya Prada vs Azam Khan: A filmy undertone to battle royale in Rampur
SP veteran Azam Khan faced his one-time political protégé, actor Jaya Prada in Rampur. He was instrumental in her win in 2004 when she had been para-dropped by SP on his home turf. However, Jaya Prada and her mentor Amar Singh were the main reason behind Khan's brief ouster from the party he had founded with Mulayam Singh Yadav, leading to an acrimonious battle this time where the discourse has stooped very low.

Gorakhpur keeps fingers crossed for its Maharajji's glory

Bhojpuri superstar Ravi Kishan may be the BJP candidate here, but people in this temple town are more concerned about whether chief minister Yogi Adityanath, a five-time MP, will retain his bastion. On the eve of counting, the common refrain was the head priest of Gorakshnath Math cannot lose his glory. "Mamla Yogiji ki saakh ka hai(The matter is about Yogiji's pride),” said RK Mani, a social worker, on Wednesday. “He has been instrumental in Gorakhpur's development… He must not lose in his fortress (like in 2018 bypoll)," Mani added.

All eyes on Rahul Gandhi vs Smriti Irani
Determined to make Rahul Gandhi sweat on his home turf, the BJP yet again fielded Smriti Irani from the Amethi, the traditional bastion of Gandhi family. Irani ran an aggressive campaign against Congress, calling Rahul a "laapata" (missing) MP. BJP has also targeted Rahul for contesting from a second seat (Wayanad in Kerala). Meanwhile, Rahul accused BJP of setting up a "factory of lies" and distributing "rivers of cash to entice voters" in an emotional letter addressed to his "Amethi family".

Walkover for PM Modi in Varanasi?
In 2019, the PM appears to have few challengers to his almost inevitable re-election from Varanasi. Five years ago, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal had put up a spirited challenge and become a rallying face for the opposition. But this time the Gathbandhan and Congress seem to have given up the fight. Despite speculation that Priyanka may take Modi head-on in Varanasi, the Congress decided to field local leader Ajay Rai from the temple town. Not surprisingly, the debate among residents of Varanasi is not about whether Modi will win, but about his victory margin.
