Assembly Election 2026 Live Updates: 'Will receive good news' -MK Stalin confident of return to power ahead of poll results

Voting for the 2026 assembly elections across key states has concluded, with the focus now shifting to exit polls that offer an early indication of possible outcomes ahead of the final results on May 4. The elections, particularly in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala and Puducherry, have been closely watched due to their political significance and high-stakes contests.

In West Bengal, polling across 142 constituencies in the second phase marked a decisive moment, with over 3.22 crore voters participating. The election saw intense mobilisation, aided by a high turnout in the first phase and sharp political messaging around issues such as the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and voter eligibility concerns. Exit polls now suggest a tightly contested race, with most projections pointing to a hung assembly and a near-even split between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP, signalling a strong challenge to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s long-standing dominance.

In Tamil Nadu, while several exit polls indicate that the DMK-led alliance may retain power, the emergence of actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam has added a new dimension to the electoral landscape. Some projections even suggest that the party could emerge as a major force, disrupting the traditional DMK-AIADMK binary.

Assam appears headed for political continuity, with most exit polls predicting a comfortable victory for the BJP. The party is projected to secure a decisive lead over the Congress, reinforcing its dominance in the state and potentially securing another term in power.

Kerala, meanwhile, is shaping up to be a closely fought contest. Exit polls give a slight edge to the Congress-led UDF, though projections vary, with some surveys still suggesting the possibility of the ruling Left Democratic Front retaining power. The outcome is seen as a crucial test of whether Kerala’s traditional pattern of alternating governments will reassert itself.

In Puducherry, the trend appears clearer, with exit polls indicating that the NDA, led locally by the AINRC-BJP alliance, is likely to retain power with a comfortable majority.

Overall, exit polls across states suggest a mixed political picture, with potential regime change in some regions and continuity in others, setting the stage for a closely watched counting day.

  • West Bengal: Exit polls suggest a hung assembly, with TMC and BJP locked in a close fight at around 145 seats each.
  • Tamil Nadu: Most polls project a DMK-led alliance return, though some indicate Vijay’s TVK could emerge as a strong disruptor or even largest party.
  • Assam: Exit polls point to a clear BJP victory, with the party likely to secure a comfortable majority over Congress.
  • Kerala: A tight contest is expected, with a slight edge to UDF, though projections vary and the outcome remains uncertain.
  • Puducherry: The NDA is projected to retain power comfortably, with a clear lead over the Congress-DMK alliance.

West Bengal Elections 2026 Live: Over 78% voting till 3 pm as Bengal’s final phase sees brisk turnout

More than 78% of the 3.21 crore voters had cast their votes till 3 pm in the second and final phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections on Wednesday, even as some areas reported sporadic violence.

There was brief tension in the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency, where chief minister Mamata Banerjee and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, both contesting from the high-profile seat, exchanged sharp remarks near the same booth area.

From Bhabanipur in Kolkata and Basanti in South 24 Parganas to Chapra in Nadia and Bally in Howrah, the day followed a familiar pattern in Bengal elections — long queues at polling booths, minor clashes, and political arguments.

Amid all this, it is still unclear whether anti-incumbency and changes in voter lists will affect the balance of power at Nabanna, the state secretariat.

While the first phase of polling on April 23 tested the BJP’s strength in north Bengal, the second and final phase is seen as more crucial, as the party is trying to make inroads into the TMC’s stronghold in south Bengal.

Out of the 142 seats voting in this phase, the TMC had won 123 in 2021, while the BJP secured 18 and the ISF got one.

Without winning a significant number of seats in regions like Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, Nadia, North and South 24 Parganas, and Purba Bardhaman, it will be difficult for the BJP to form the government.

This is why the 78.68% turnout recorded till 3 pm in this phase is being seen as very important.

West Bengal polls 2026: Polling peacefully under way, turnout may surpass first phase, says Bengal CEO Agarwal
The second phase of voting in West Bengal was progressing peacefully amid elaborate security arrangements, the state's Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal said on Wednesday, exuding confidence that the turnout might surpass the first phase figures.

More than 60 per cent of the 3.21 crore electors voted till 1 pm in the second phase of polling in West Bengal amid sporadic violence and attacks on candidates.

Agarwal said extensive security deployment and close monitoring were ensuring a smooth voting process across the state.

"In the first phase, West Bengal showed the country that a 93 per cent voter turnout is possible, and that elections can be free and fair. In this phase as well, we aim to match or even exceed that benchmark," Agarwal said.

"There is proper deployment of CAPF, and all arrangements are in place. Voting is taking place completely peacefully, and no complaints are being reported from anywhere," he told reporters.

The CEO urged all voters to participate in the electoral process. "We are also urging residents of high-rise buildings to go out and cast their votes. Everyone should vote. The Election Commission of India wants every person whose name is on the voter list to exercise their right to vote," he added

West Bengal election 2026: There will be presidential rule if repolls occur: BJP's Asim Kumar Sarkar
BJP candidate Asim Kumar Sarkar on Wednesday said that if repolling is held in West Bengal after May 4, it could lead to President's Rule in the state. While thanking the Election Commission for "peaceful polling", he also alleged EVM malfunctions and irregularities, demanding repolling in affected booths and corrective action wherever required.

Speaking to ANI, Sarkar said," I would like to thank the Election Commission. I had never seen such peaceful polling in Bengal. There were sporadic incidents but EC had said in the all-party meeting that there would be a repoll if any issues happened. Central forces are very active."

He further claimed that if repolling is conducted after May 4, central forces may no longer be present and made a political assertion regarding governance in the state thereafter.

"Repolling happens after 4th May, they won't be in power at that time. From 5th May onward, there would be President's Rule. So, you decide whether you want that or a peaceful polling...EVMs were malfunctioning at all the booths I visited; I do not know the reason, though. I have received 28 EVM malfunction reports in my constituency. I have complained; I had never seen such high instances of EVM malfunction in one constituency," Sarkar added.

Bengal polls: 'Singham' officer on ground as polling under way in South 24 Parganas
Special police observer Ajay Pal Sharma on Wednesday toured West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, keeping vigil on the polling process during the second phase of assembly elections, officials said.

Sharma, a Uttar Pradesh-cadre IPS officer currently posted as ACP in Prayagraj, had drawn political controversy over his proactive measures in the Diamond Harbour area, considered the stronghold of TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, over the past two days to prevent intimidation and violence.

Sharma, who earned the moniker 'Singham' for his crackdown on criminals, faced protests from TMC leaders and workers on Tuesday who accused him of overstepping his role and "intimidating" party workers ahead of the polls.

Eyewitness accounts claimed Sharma was heard warning potential troublemakers of "appropriate treatment" if they tried to disrupt polling in the state, and had even landed up at the doorstep of the Falta assembly segment's TMC candidate Jahangir Khan, and said authorities would take "firm and immediate steps" if there were reports of voter intimidation.

Notwithstanding the party's political retaliation, which included moving Calcutta High Court against the officer, Sharma was seen coordinating with the armed central forces deployed in the area and leaving for the polling stations where people queued up to exercise their franchise since early morning.

In the early hours of the day, Sharma held a 30-minute closed-door meeting with CRPF DGP Gyanendra Pratap Singh, who reached Diamond Harbour to take stock of security arrangements in the politically sensitive region, and other senior officials of the force, before the observer left for his rounds of the constituency.

West Bengal polls: Locals of Panihati chant 'go back' slogans against BJP candidate, mother of RG Kar victim Debnath
As the second phase of elections is under way in West Bengal, tensions surfaced in Panihati where locals raised slogans of "go back” against the mother of RG Kar rape and murder victim and BJP candidate Ratna Debnath, who had arrived to assess the polling situation.

Nearly 20 months after the rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Hospital, the victim's mother Ratna Debnath has entered the political arena seeking justice for her daughter.

Contesting the assembly elections on a BJP ticket, she said her decision is driven by the demand for accountability and justice.

Speaking to reporters about the "Go back” slogans raised against her, Ratna Debnath said, “Chasing them away won’t solve anything; they will come again. Strict action must be taken.”

She further alleged an incident of assault, stating, “I went inside and everything was fine. When I came out, I saw an elderly woman who had pain in her leg and could not stand properly. I felt bad and asked someone nearby to help her. Within 10 metres, Trinamool goons attacked me and told me they would not let me go out.”

Appealing to voters, Debnath said, “I urge all people to press button 3 on the EVM and cast their vote. I will win, Panihati will win, and the lotus will bloom across Bengal. I came from booth 70 where the machine was malfunctioning. Voting had just begun there, and officials said polling time may be extended by two hours.”

West Bengal election 2026: 'Will win all 11 seats in Kolkata,' says TMC MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay
Trinamool Congress MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay on Tuesday said that security arrangements during elections were not a concern for his party, while expressing confidence in the party's performance in Kolkata.

Speaking to ANI, Bandyopadhyay stated that the Trinamool Congress had won all 11 seats in Kolkata in the previous election and expressed confidence that the party would repeat the same performance this time.

"The nature of security arrangements is not our concern. In the last election, the Trinamool Congress secured 11 out of 11 seats in Kolkata, and this time as well, it will win all 11 seats. If security is tight, then that is fine--we also want peaceful voting. However, I strongly condemn the way the Election Commission of India has deleted lakhs of votes," he said.

West Bengal recorded a voter turnout of 61.11 per cent till 1 pm on Wednesday, as polling is under way for 142 Assembly seats in the second phase of the state elections.

According to the Election Commission, Hooghly topped the districts with a turnout of 64.57 per cent, followed by Howrah at 60.68 per cent.

West Bengal election 2026: Suvendu Adhikari alleges attack by TMC workers during Bhabanipur booth visit; Police lathi charge to disperse crowd

West Bengal election 2026: Officials didn't delete names of voters dying 25 years ago to protect Mamata Banerjee: BJP's Rudranil Ghosh
BJP candidate from Shibpur assembly seat, Rudranil Ghosh, on Wednesday alleged that due to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), valid names were not deleted by state officials from the voter list.

Speaking to ANI, Ghosh further accused CM Mamata of creating confusion among the public and defaming the Election Commission of India (ECI). He also alleged that the TMC had threatened the West Bengal officials, which prevents them from performing their duty.

"When Mamata Banerjee was protesting the SIR, she had said no names should be deleted. The officers didn't delete the names of people who died 25 years ago. This means that to defame ECI, to confuse, to mislead the people, Mamata Banerjee's officers here did this, which is against the ECI and the law of our country, just to protect Mamata Banerjee," Ghosh said.

"Now the question is, why did they do this? Are these officers bad? No, neither the police officers here are bad, nor are the government officials here bad; their family receives a death threat. They receive a harassment threat from the Trinamool. Meaning, whether you're a government official or a common citizen, if you speak negatively about Trinamool's illegal activities, you'll be threatened and prevented from doing your work," he added.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Congress MLC Bhai Jagtap expressed confidence in Mamata Banerjee's victory in West Bengal. "Definitely Mamata Banerjee is coming to power once again. She has done good work and the people of Bengal are inspired...even though we are contesting against her, facts remain facts," he told ANI.

West Bengal election 2026: TMC, BJP workers trade slogans as Suvendu visits Kalighat area; LoP seeks more CAPF deployment
Tension flared up in Kolkata's Kalighat area on Wednesday when the BJP's Bhabanipur candidate Suvendu Adhikari visited a polling booth and was greeted with slogans by TMC workers, prompting police intervention and a complaint by the opposition leader to the EC seeking deployment of additional central forces.

Security forces had to resort to a lathi-charge to disperse the crowd. Adhikari chased the sloganeering crowds, whom he accused were "outsiders trying to influence the polls".

The incident took place near Joy Hind Bhavan in Kalighat when Adhikari, who has been touring polling booths across the Bhabanipur assembly constituency since the morning, came to inspect the polling arrangements.

As soon as he reached the area, TMC workers and supporters raised slogans of 'Jai Bangla' and 'chor, chor' against him, while BJP activists responded with chants of 'Jai Shri Ram', leading to heightened tension in the politically sensitive neighbourhood.

Police personnel deployed at the spot had a tough time controlling cadres of both parties as the slogan war intensified and supporters from both camps gathered around the booth area.

Standing before reporters, Adhikari called up Election Commission officials and complained about the situation, alleging that he had been attacked and that BJP workers were being obstructed.

'Too late now for Mamata to hit ground': CPM takes dig at TMC amid Phase 2 polling
CPI(M) West Bengal secretary Mohammad Salim on Wednesday lambasted chief minister Mamata Banerjee over her visits to polling booths during the ongoing elections and said that those who "keep flying also need to hit the ground", adding that the TMC chief was "never a star in the sky".

After casting a vote in Kolkata along with his wife Rosina Khatun, Salim remarked that Mamata Banerjee's political rise was manufactured and not natural. Taking a swipe at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Salim said leaders must remain connected to the ground reality.

"You need to hit the ground. Those who keep flying also need to hit the ground. When the rocket cracker has gunpowder inside, it goes up in the sky when you ignite it. But when it runs out of gunpowder, it fizzles out and drops to the ground. It is too late now, Mamata, to hit the ground, too little too late. She was never a star in the sky; she was made one. Voting was held very peacefully in the first phase as well and even now it is the same," Salim told ANI.

He also dedicated his vote to those allegedly deprived of their voting rights and said CPI(M) continues to fight for democratic rights and against communalism in the state.

"I dedicate my vote to those people who have been deprived of voting rights and disenfranchised with a design. This is very unfortunate, but we will continue to fight for their rights. In Bengal, we are fighting for democratic rights and against communalism. The fight will continue," he added.

West Bengal election 2026: PM must resign when TMC wins Bengal, says Derek O'Brien
Trinamool Congress's Rajya Sabha MP Derek O'Brien on Wednesday expressed confidence that his party will come back to power in the state after the assembly elections and challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to resign when the results come.

In a video shared on microblogging site X, O'Brien accused the prime minister of making exaggerated political claims and urged him to "accept the challenge" instead of indulging in "big talk."

"Narendra, you had announced that you are the candidate on all 294 seats in West Bengal. Leave out the big talk and accept this challenge..." O'Brien wrote.

He asserted that if the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC wins the state, the prime minister should step down from his post. "When Mamata Banerjee and TMC win West Bengal, you will resign from your post as the prime minister," he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed confidence in the BJP's victory in the Assembly elections in four States and one Union Territory, including West Bengal.
The polling for the second phase of West Bengal Assembly elections began this morning, while polls were held in Tamil Nadu, Keralam, Assam and Puducherry concluded earlier this month.

Addressing the inauguration ceremony of the Ganga Expressway in Hardoi, PM Modi hailed the high voter turnout in West Bengal, noting that the people are coming out to exercise their franchise in a fearless atmosphere.

The Prime Minister said, "It is a significant day in the festival of democracy. Polling for the second phase of elections is underway in Bengal. According to reports, Bengal is witnessing high voter turnout. Just like in the first phase, people are coming out of their homes in large numbers to cast their votes, and images of long queues are all over social media."

"Voting is taking place in Bengal this time in a fearless atmosphere, something that was previously difficult even to imagine. This is a symbol of the strengthening of the Constitution and democracy in India. I express my gratitude to the people of Bengal for being so vigilant about their rights and voting in large numbers," he added.

Noting the BJP-NDA's recent poll victories in the Bihar Assembly elections and local body polls in Gujarat, PM Modi expressed confidence in a hat-trick of wins for the party.

PM Modi said, "Some time ago, when elections were held in Bihar, the BJP-NDA had registered a resounding victory, creating history. Just yesterday, the results of the elections for Gujarat's municipal corporations, municipalities, district panchayats, nagar panchayats, and tehsil panchayats were declared. The BJP has won 80 to 85 per cent of the municipalities and panchayats."

Incidents were reported from several pockets of Bhangar and Canning Purba since morning, prompting the deployment of central forces, state police and NIA teams in identified sensitive areas.

At Hedia in Canning Purba, the ISF alleged that one of its polling agents at booth number 142 received death threats from TMC supporters. ISF candidate Arabul Islam visited the location following the complaint and accused the administration of failing to ensure a fair election.

"Votes are being looted in Canning Purba. Our agents in booths are being driven out of several booths after snatching their cards and documents," Islam said, as cited by PTI.

Bengal Polls: 'We are monitoring, will do what is required': Suvendu Adhikari on BJP's allegations of EVM irregularities in Falta
Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday said that the party is currently monitoring the situation, after the BJP alleged irregularities with the EVM in Falta.

Speaking to reporters, Adhikari said that the Election Commission has taken cognisance of the matter, whereas he has also conveyed the development of the situation to home minister Amit Shah and other senior leaders of the BJP.

"We are also monitoring and will do what is required. The Election Commission has also taken cognisance of this. If it works in this manner, then what is required will be done. I will discuss it with the candidate. Bhupendra Yadav ji called me at 9 am. I conveyed the situation. Just a few minutes back, the home minister, my leader Amit Shah ji, called me. I told him about the Falta incident. This is TMC's technique. We are taking action. Nothing has happened yet. 35 per cent of voting has taken place; a lot remains to be seen," he said.

Meanwhile, West Bengal chief electoral officer said that the polling booths with taping of any EVM button will undergo repolling, after the BJP alleged irregularities in Falta under the Diamond Harbour constituency.

"If reports of taping of any button come in, that should be verified and noted. If true, those booths will go for a repoll," West Bengal CEO said.

Earlier today, BJP's co-incharge of West Bengal, Amit Malviya, alleged that voters were prevented from choosing the party candidate at several polling booths in Falta under the Diamond Harbour constituency during the ongoing phase two of Assembly polling.

West Bengal election 2026: 'Booths to go for repoll if taping of EVM buttons verified': West Bengal CEO after BJP alleges irregularities in Falta
West Bengal chief electoral officer on Wednesday said that the polling booths with taping of any EVM button will undergo repolling, after the BJP alleged irregularities in Falta under the Diamond Harbour constituency.

He claimed that in multiple booths, the BJP option was allegedly blocked using tape, calling it the "Diamond Harbour Model" and demanding a repoll in the affected areas.

In a post on X, Malviya wrote, "This is what Mamata Banerjee was defending when she spoke up for Jehangir Khan, a criminal contesting on a TMC ticket from Falta in Diamond Harbour. In several polling booths, the option to vote for the BJP has been blocked using a tape, effectively preventing voters from exercising their choice. This is the so-called 'Diamond Harbour Model,' the same template that helped Mamata Banerjee's nephew Abhishek Banerjee secure his Lok Sabha seat."

The BJP has fielded Dipak Kumar Halder against TMC's sitting MLA Panna Lal Halder in Diamond Harbour. They are facing a repeat clash after Panna Lal Halder defeated the BJP candidate in the last elections by a margin of 16,996 (7.6 per cent) votes.

With voting concluded across key states, exit polls have taken centre stage, offering early signals ahead of the final results on May 4. The projections suggest a mixed political landscape, with signs of both continuity and potential shifts in power across regions.

West Bengal remains the most closely watched contest, where polling in the final phase saw high voter participation and intense campaigning. Issues such as the revision of electoral rolls, identity politics and strong ground mobilisation shaped the election. Exit polls point to a neck-and-neck battle between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP, with several surveys indicating the possibility of a hung assembly. The projections reflect both the BJP’s expansion in the state and the TMC’s continued grassroots strength, making the outcome highly uncertain.

In Tamil Nadu, the contest appears less straightforward than in previous elections. While many exit polls suggest the DMK-led alliance could return to power, the entry of actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam has disrupted established political equations. Some projections indicate that the party could perform strongly enough to influence the final outcome, pointing to a potential realignment in the state’s political landscape.

Assam, by contrast, is expected to deliver a more decisive verdict. Exit polls consistently project a comfortable majority for the BJP, indicating political stability and a consolidation of support for the ruling party over the Congress.

Kerala presents a competitive scenario, with exit polls suggesting a marginal advantage for the Congress-led UDF, though the ruling LDF remains within striking distance. The contest is being seen as a test of whether the state will revert to its traditional pattern of alternating governments or continue with the Left’s extended tenure.

In Puducherry, the outlook appears relatively clear, with the NDA projected to retain power comfortably, aided by fragmented opposition votes and steady support for the incumbent leadership.
