England vs Nepal Highlights, T20 World Cup 2026: Sam Curran holds his nerve as England beat Nepal in last-over thriller

England vs Nepal Highlights, T20 World Cup 2026: England survived a major scare to defeat Nepal by four runs in a dramatic T20 World Cup clash at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, with the match going down to the final over after multiple momentum shifts.

Batting first, England endured a shaky beginning as Phil Salt departed for one in the second over. Jos Buttler and Jacob Bethell countered with a brisk stand, adding 38 for the second wicket before Nandan Yadav removed Buttler for 26. England reached 57 for two in the powerplay but slipped again when Sandeep Lamichhane trapped Tom Banton lbw with the first ball after the fielding restrictions.

Bethell and Harry Brook then rebuilt with composure, combining for a crucial 71-run partnership. Bethell impressed on debut, scoring 55 off 34 balls to become only the second Englishman after Kevin Pietersen to register a fifty on T20 World Cup debut. Brook followed with a well-paced 53 from 32 balls before falling to Yadav. Will Jacks provided the late thrust, smashing an unbeaten 39 off 18 to lift England to 184. Along the way, Buttler surpassed Mahela Jayawardene to climb to third on the all-time T20 World Cup run-scoring list.

Nepal responded fearlessly, surging to 31 without loss inside three overs. England fought back through Liam Dawson and Will Jacks, reducing Nepal to 47 for two in the powerplay. Rohit Paudel and Dipendra Singh Airee then applied sustained pressure, taking Nepal to 101 after 12 overs.

Sam Curran broke the dangerous stand by removing Airee for 44, and Dawson followed by dismissing Paudel soon after. Despite Lokesh Bam’s unbeaten 39 off 20 balls, Nepal finished on 180 for six.

England’s bowlers held their nerve in the closing moments, with Curran calmly defending the final over to seal a narrow but hard-earned victory.

Karan KC to Jos Buttler, That's a peach of a delivery from Karan. Bowled with a wobbled seam, a touch fuller and on off. This one angles in and then straightens off the deck. Jos Buttler leans on to block but the ball agonizingly goes past the outside edge.

Karan KC to Jos Buttler, FOUR! There comes the first boundary of the game. Full, outside off, Jos Buttler looks to go over the top but is nowhere near the pitch of the ball. In fact, he plays early and the ball comes late. Goes off the toe end of the bat but still has enough to go wide of mid off, to his right, into the fence behind.

Out walk the umpires once again to the middle. The Nepal team spreads itself out to the middle. Out walk the English openers - Phil Salt and Jos Buttler. It will be the pace of Karan KC to start things off. Salt to face. Here we go!

The umpires and the match referee make their way out to the middle. The two teams are in readiness to follow them, for their national anthems. It will be the Nepalese anthem to be played first, followed by England's.

England captain Harry Brook won the toss and opted to bat against Nepal in their opening match of the T20 World Cup here on Sunday.

Brook said the pitch would be in the best shape in the first innings and would look to bowl in the second innings.

"Little bit of spin and a bit of bounce. We wanted two out and out pacers with the new ball. Can't take anything for granted, just stay with the situation and adapt to the situation," he said during the toss.

Nepal captain Rohit Paudel said he would have opted to bowl had he won the toss.

"Looking at the conditions, chasing is the better option. It's a used wicket, if it turns, it'll help us in the second innings," he said.

The Teams:

England: Harry Brook (c), Philip Salt, Jos Buttler (w), Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton, Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Liam Dawson, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Luke Wood.

Nepal: Rohit Paudel (c), Kushal Bhurtel, Aasif Sheikh (w), Dipendra Singh Airee, Aarif Sheikh, Lokesh Bam, Gulsan Jha, Karan KC, Nandan Yadav, Sandeep Lamichhane, Sher Malla.

'I'm not sure whether England can get to 300', quirps former Indian stumper Parthiv Patel on air. Goodness gracious, he is nearly drooling while mentioning about the names in that English batting lineup. What is it that they cannot achieve? In September 2025, they became just the second Test-playing nation and the first in the top 8 to cross the 300-mark in T20Is, with South Africa bearing the brunt of their willows of mass destruction at Old Trafford. Make no mistake, be it Australia or Nepal, this Harry Brook-led side has only one aim - Bazball, baseball, Brookball - call the technique what you want - but blast the opposition out of your way. And Wankhede is not the biggest of grounds, so the Nepalese bowlers will have their work cut out. Their only hope is with this being an afternoon game and the pitch being used for the second time in two days, there could be a bit of sluggishness to the deck.

Hmmm... all games at the same venue? Nice, if you are a Nepal fan. Remember, India played all their games at the same venue during the 2025 Champions Trophy. Result? We all know. Nepal play England today and then Italy, West Indies and Scotland. And they are the only team from Group C to be given this facility. Who knows - with due respect to Scotland and Italy - if Nepal manage to beat either of England or West Indies (or say, both) - this could also become a group of death, aye?

ENG vs NEP T20 World Cup Live Score: 'We would have bowled first'
We would have bowled first. Looking at the conditions, chasing is the better option. It's a used wicket, if it turns, it'll help us in the second innings. Playing all the games here is an advantage for us, as a team to play in Asian conditions helps Nepal, that's a big advantage for us.

ENG vs NEP T20 World Cup Live Score: 'We're having a bat first'
We're having a bat first. Think the pitch will be in the best shape in the first innings, we'll look to bowl in the second innings. Little bit of spin and a bit of bounce. We wanted two out and out pacers with the new ball. Playing really well, SL was awesome preparation and we have taken plenty of confidence. Feeling good and I'm hopeful of taking good decisions. Can't take anything for granted, just stay with the situation and adapt to the situation.

The skipper of Nepal, ROHIT PAUDEL, says that he would have bowled first any which ways. Explains that looking at the conditions, he feels that chasing is a better option. On the possibility of the track slowing down since it being a used wicket, Paudel agrees, stating that mostly his side loves slow tracks and because this is a used wicket, it will spin a little bit and if that happens, it will help his team. On being asked about who are the four players that Nepal have left out for this clash, Rohit smiles and struggles for a bit to remember the names. He starts by saying Sundeep Jora, Sompal Kami and Lalit Rajbanshi, but struggles to remember the fourth name. On playing all their league games at the Wankhede, RP feels that playing all the games here will always give an advantage to his side. Adds that as a team, to play in Asian conditions will help Nepal.

HARRY BROOK, the captain of England, says that they will bat first as he feels that the pitch will be in the best shape in the first innings. Hopes that they can put on a good score and defend it. Adds that there was spin and bounce in the second innings last match. Feels that those matches in Sri Lanka have boosted their confidence but you cannot take any side for granted in the T20 World Cup.

ENG vs NEP T20 World Cup Live Score: Opportunity for Nepal
For Nepal, it is another opportunity to make an impact on the global stage. In the last edition, they narrowly lost to South Africa by just one run and bowled Bangladesh out for 106. Recently, they defeated two-time T20 World Cup winners West Indies 2-1, a result that will certainly fuel their confidence.

Nepal have also made finals in other tournaments, including a tri-series last June against the Netherlands and Scotland and a T20I Quadrangular featuring Qatar, Hong Kong, and Kuwait, showcasing steady progress on the international stage.

ENG vs NEP T20 World Cup Live Score: England's progress
Away from the off-field episode, England have had a perfect build-up to the World Cup and will be one of the teams to beat.

Placed in Group C alongside debutants Italy, Nepal, Scotland, and the West Indies, they know they must hit top gear from the start.

England won 11 out of 17 T20Is last year while losing only two, boasting explosive talent across the board for both setting and chasing big totals.

However, bowling in dewy conditions could pose challenges, and England will rely on experienced campaigner Adil Rashid for solutions.

ENG vs NEP T20 World Cup Live Score: Brook on the incident
During the Captains’ Press Conference, Brook fielded questions on the incident, and all-rounder Will Jacks also addressed the matter during pre-match media interactions on Friday.

"I wasn't actually in New Zealand, so I don't know anything about it. It's just one of those things that he obviously made a wrong decision and he accepted that. He has went out trying to move forward in a positive direction with that," Jacks said.

"He knows what he has done and there’s nothing you can change about that, so there's no point focussing on it too much. On his perspective, he wants his cricket to do the talking," Jacks added.

ENG vs NEP T20 World Cup Live Score: Hello and welcome!
Hello and welcome to the Live coverage of ICC T20 World Cup match between England and Nepal.

An embattled Harry Brook will hope England shift focus from off-field controversies to on-field action when the two-time champions take on Nepal in their T20 World Cup opener on Sunday.

Brook leads a formidable England side that has enjoyed consistent success in the T20I format, but the spotlight has also lingered on an incident at a Wellington nightclub, where the English captain was reportedly involved in an altercation with a bouncer during the pre-Ashes tour.

England vs Nepal Highlights, T20 World Cup 2026: England held their nerve to edge Nepal by four runs in a gripping T20 World Cup encounter at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, surviving a spirited challenge from the underdogs in a match that swung repeatedly. Key half-centuries from Jacob Bethell and captain Harry Brook helped England post a competitive 184, while Jos Buttler reached a personal milestone by becoming the third-highest run-scorer in T20 World Cup history.

England’s innings never fully settled. Phil Salt fell early, and while Buttler and Bethell added quick runs, Nepal kept striking at regular intervals. The turning point came through a vital 71-run stand between Bethell and Brook, which steadied England after early losses. Bethell’s 55 on debut and Brook’s fluent 53 provided the backbone, before Will Jacks’ late unbeaten 39 ensured England finished strongly.

Nepal’s chase began with real intent as Kushal Bhurtel and Aasif Sheikh raced out of the blocks. England responded through Liam Dawson and Will Jacks to claw back control, but Nepal refused to fade. Rohit Paudel and Dipendra Singh Airee stitched together a vital partnership that kept the chase alive deep into the innings.

Just when Nepal looked capable of pulling off a famous upset, England struck twice in quick succession through Sam Curran and Dawson. Despite a late assault from Lokesh Bam, Nepal fell agonisingly short on 180 for six.

England’s bowlers delivered under pressure, and Curran’s calm execution in the final over sealed a narrow victory. The contest underlined Nepal’s growing stature on the global stage while allowing England to escape with four crucial points.
