India vs New Zealand Highlights, 3rd Test Day 1: India slump to 86/4 after Jadeja, Sundar bowl out New Zealand for 235

India committed harakiri late on the opening day of the third and final Test at the Wankhede, slumping to 86 for four at the close of play against New Zealand in Mumbai on Friday.

Already 0-2 down in the series, India bowlers did really well to first bowl out the visitors for 235 but then, in the final 20 minutes, the hosts hit the panic button, losing three wickets in 8 balls to hand the Kiwis the opening day honours.

The three wickets that India lost late in the session saw Yashasvi Jaiswal getting knocked over while trying an extravagant reverse slog-sweep and Virat Kohli committing a blunder while trying to steal a single and getting run out for 4.

At the close of play, India were still 149 runs behind.

After losing Rohit Sharma early, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill build a solid 53-run stand but the in final 15 minutes, India committed hara-kiri to hand the Kiwis a big advantage in this contest.

It started with Jaiswal getting knocked over while attempting a reverse sweep. Nightwatchman Siraj then wasted a review for an obvious LBW call. In the final over, Virat Kohli went for a non-existent run to put India into further trouble.

OUT! Nightwatchman wastes a review for India as Mohammed Siraj walks back for a first-ball duck. A tossed up length ball from Ajaz from round the wicket and Siraj pressed forward to defend it. It turns away after pitching and beats Siraj's outside edge and hits his pad. It looked dead out but Siraj and Shubman Gill decided to send it upstairs. The third umpire confirms the on-field call as Siraj walks back disappointed.

OUT! Bowled! Ajaz Patel gets the breakthrough, the Kiwis were looking for! Yashasvi Jaiswal is bowled around his legs as he walks back for 30. A quicker delivery from Ajaz outside leg and Jaiswal went for the the premeditated reverse-sweep. Mises the ball completely as the ball darts onto his leg stump. So, Ajaz strikes to break the 53-run partnership.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill have now added fifty runs off just 58 balls for the second wicket as New Zealand's search for a breakthrough continues. India have scored at 4.61 RPO despite losing Rohit Sharma early for 18. Both Jaiswal and Gill have looked good against the Kiwi spinners. They have been beaten on a few occasions but have overall looked in control.

FOUR! A cracking hit from Shubman Gill as he fires his second boundary. He had tried sweeping previously to spinners and was unsuccessful. But this time, he nails an Ajaz Patel delivery to deep backward square-leg fence in style. The sound the bat made after connecting with the ball was just perfect! Wit hte baoundary Gill also brought up the fifty for India in the 14th over.

Dropped! Shubman Gill gets a faint inside edge off Glenn Phillips and the ball then hits his pads and goes straight flush into Tom Blundell's helmet. He had a concussion test a couple of overs back as well when an Ajaz Patel delivery took off from length and hit him. Now Blundell cops another blow as physio arrives onto the field. Looks fine but another concussion test will take place. The spinners are getting quite a bit of turn and bounce off the surface and it has made the life of batters and even keeper quite a bit tough!

Glenn Phillips comes into the attack and is welcomed by Yashasvi Jaiswal with consecutive boundaries on the on-side. A full toss and a length ball at stumps and Jaiswal sweeps them both to the deep fence. Two lose balls from Phillips and both get the deserved treatment.

Both Jaiswal and Gill looking to rotate strike at the moment after the fall of Rohit Sharma. A tidy three-run over from Ajaz comes to an end.

Dropped! Will O'Rourke has dropped an easy catch at backward square-leg as Rohit Sharma gets a lifeline early in the innings. A short ball from Matt Henry angling in and Rohit went for the pull. The ball flies to the left of O'Rourke. He gets both hands to it but is not able to hold on to the catch. How costly will that be for the Kiwis? Rohit survives on 15!

FOUR! Rohit Sharma looking really good at the start of his innings. He now finds his third boundary. A superb back-foot punch from Rohit off Mat Henry and the ball goes to the cover fence in no time.

FOUR! Smooth! Creamed through the off side. Matt Henry bowls a full away-swinger outside off. Rohit presses forward and opens the face of the bat. Drives it beautifully, wide of backward-point fielder as the ball races to the fence.

So, That's it! New Zealand innings ends on 235 in the first innings. Washington Sundar gets the final wicket in for of Ajaz, who missed a flatter one from the bowler around off. Ajaz offered no shot and it was a simple decision for the umpire. He sent it upstairs but it was in vain.

Ravindra Jadeja starred with a fifer while Sundar picked up 4 as India have shot down New Zealand for 235 after losing the toss on Day 1 of the third and final Test.

Daryl Mitchell (82) was the top scorer for the Kiwis while Will Younf added 71.

OUT! Rohit Sharma grabs a stunner at first slip as Daryl Mitchell's stay in the middle ends on 82. Washington Sundar gets the wicket India were desperately looking for. Sundar from round the wicket bowls a good length ball around off. Mitchell looking to guide it to third-man ends up steering it to Rohit, who dives low to his right and pulls off a brilliant catch. A solid knock from Mitchell ends.

OUT! Trapped in front! Ravindra Jadeja strikes again! He grabs his fourth as Ish Sodhi is out LBW for 7. A 90 kph full-length ball from round the wicket from Jadeja and it kept low and spun. Sodhi play it dow nte wrong line and misses. The ball hits his pad and Sodhi didn't even review it. So, the 23-run partnership has been broken.

Daryl Mitchell goes for a reverse-sweep off a good length delivery from Washington Sundar from round the wicket and misses. The ball hits his front pad and after a discussion from the close-in fielders, Rohit Sharma send it upstairs. Ball-tracking shows that the delivery is just pitching at the line of leg-stump but is spinning and missing the leg-stump. Mitchell survives on 63!

Bang! A cracking strike from Daryl Mitchell and it goes the distance. A short of length ball from Sundar from round the wicket and Mitchell rocks on to the backfoot and belts it over the deep mid-wicket fence for half a dozen. With that six, 200 also came up for the Kiwis!

Will Young and Daryl Mitchell scored battling half-centuries in energy-sapping conditions as New Zealand reached 192-6 at tea on the opening day of the third and final Test against India in Mumbai on Friday.

Mitchell was unbeaten on 53 while Ish Sodhi was batting on one as the Black Caps endured oppressive heat and humidity at the Wankhede Stadium to lay a solid platform in their bid to complete a 3-0 series win.

Young notched his half-century by hitting Washington Sundar out of the ground shortly after lunch and looked well set for a maiden ton only to fall against the run of play for 71, edging Ravindra Jadeja to first slip.

After ending the 87-run partnership for the fourth wicket, Jadeja claimed another victim in the same over by castling Tom Blundell for a three-ball duck, but Mitchell steadied the ship with a gutsy fifty despite suffering cramp.

Glenn Phillips departed for 17 shortly before tea as Jadeja bowled him out with a straighter delivery.

Tom Latham won the toss and had no hesitation in choosing to bat but it was India who enjoyed early success, paceman Akash Deep trapping Devon Conway lbw for four inside the opening half hour when there was plenty of variable bounce.

India wasted little time introducing spin to take advantage of the tricky conditions but New Zealand rose to the challenge with Young lofting Ravichandran Ashwin for a big six over long on in the 15th over.

Washington then struck from the other end by bowling out Latham for a fine 28 and Rachin Ravindra for five with almost identical deliveries that straightened slightly before going past the bat.

New Zealand won the opening match in Bengaluru by eight wickets for their first Test victory in India in 36 years, and wrapped up the series in Pune with a 113-run win.

It was New Zealand's maiden series win in India going back to 1955 and the Black Caps snapped the hosts' home streak of 18 straight series triumphs since a 2-1 loss to England in 2012.

The last time India were blanked in a home series was in 2000 when they lost 2-0 to South Africa, and they will eye a morale boosting win before a five-match tour of Australia.

Ravindra Jadeja was the hero of the session for India, taking three wickets in it. New Zealand added 100 more runs to their total for the loss of three wickets in the second session of the opening day. Will Young (71) and Daryl Mitchell (53 not out) completed their half-centuries in it to keep New Zealand's innings moving forward. The visitors started well in the session and did not lose any wicket in the first hour of it. But Jadeja turned the tide with a double-wicket over and before the tea break the left-arm spinner took his third to keep India just ahead in the game.

Daryl Mitchell completed his fifty, off 90 balls, with a single off Ravichandran Ashwin. It is his 12th half-century in Test cricket. Mitchell hit three boundaries to reach the milestone. He is taking New Zealand to a good score at the moment.

Two in the over for Ravindra Jadeja. As they say, one wicket brings another. This time, Jadeja cleans up Tom Blundell for a duck. It brings back much needed energy in the Indian camp.

Finally a wicket for India in the second session. The long vigil from Will Young in Mumbai heat ends. Ravindra Jadeja forces an edge off Young's bat and Rohit Sharma makes a simple catch at slip. Big breakthrough for India as Young, 71 off 138 balls, and Daryl Mitchell (39*) were taking the game away from the hosts, adding 87 runs for the fourth wicket.

BANG! Daryl Mitchell (34*) reverse sweeps Ravindra Jadeja for his second four, towards third man. It brings up 150 for New Zealand too. India are still looking for a wicket in this session without much success. The two NZ batters are dictating the terms in the middle at the moment.

Daryl Mitchell (28*) gets down on one leg and sweeps the Ravindra Jadeja delivery hard in front of square on the leg-side. He hits it against the turn, but makes good contact and it goes in the gap. First boundary for Mitchell today.

Good first hour of the second session for New Zealand. They have added 42 runs for no loss during this period. Will Young (62*) completed his 8th Test half-century and with Daryl Mitchell (23*) frustrated India bowlers by adding an unbeaten 62 runs for the fourth wicket.

The only trouble for the Kiwi batters seems to be the extreme humid weather in Mumbai.
