Yesterday match result: Jofra Archer powers Rajasthan Royals to IPL playoffs with all-round masterclass vs Mumbai Indians

MUMBAI: Jofra Archer delivered a statement performance under pressure to propel Rajasthan Royals into the IPL 2026 playoffs, producing a match-winning all-round display against the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. Responding emphatically to criticism from former England captains Michael Atherton and Michael Vaughan over prioritising the IPL over a Test assignment, the 31-year-old starred with a blistering 15-ball 32 and then returned figures of 3 for 17 to seal a 30-run victory.


The win secured Royals the fourth and final playoff berth, setting up an Eliminator clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad in New Chandigarh on May 27. The result ensured that Punjab Kings (15 points) were eliminated and It also rendered the final league match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants inconsequential. For Mumbai Indians, the defeat capped a forgettable campaign, as they finished with just four wins from 14 matches.






He then returned to castle Naman Dhir with a sharp inswinger, leaving Mumbai reeling at 38 for four inside six overs after Brijesh Sharma cleaned up Tilak Varma and Ryan Rickelton fell cheaply. The early damage put Rajasthan firmly in control, though Mumbai fought back through Suryakumar Yadav and Will Jacks.


Suryakumar, enduring a lean season, rediscovered his touch with his 60 off 42 balls, while Jacks counterattacked with 33 off 18. Their 63-run fifth-wicket partnership revived hopes, which were further bolstered by a 48-run sixthwicket stand between Suryakumar and Hardik Pandya (34 off 15). However, Archer returned at a crucial moment after the second time out to dismiss Pandya with a well-directed short ball, effectively stalling the chase. Mumbai eventually finished at 175 for nine.


Earlier, Rajasthan had staged their own recovery with the bat. Asked to bat first in a must-win contest, they were in trouble at 139 for six in the 16th over before Archer’s late blitz galvanised the innings. Promoted to No. 7, Archer struck three sixes and a four in his 32, injecting momentum.


Ravindra Jadeja, featuring as an Impact Player, added a brisk 19 not out off 11 balls, while Nandre Burger chipped in with a cameo 10 not out off three deliveries. Rajasthan plundered 73 runs in the last five overs, including 30 in the final two, to finish on a formidable 205 for eight.


The build-up had been uneven, with contributions coming in patches. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a quick 27, Dhruv Jurel made 38, while Dasun Shanaka (29) and captain Riyan Parag (14) chipped in.Despite no 50-run stands, Royals’ aggressive intent saw them hit 15 sixes.
