Roy Keane and Bruno Fernandes have never been shy about speaking their minds. This week, their disagreement took another public turn after the
Manchester United captain accused the club legend of misrepresenting his comments. Keane's response was brief, but it was enough to set social media buzzing.
The former United skipper posted a pointed message online just after Fernandes had spoken about the issue in a high-profile interview. While Keane did not mention the midfielder by name, many supporters took the post as a direct response to the criticism coming from the current captain at Old Trafford.
Roy Keane and Bruno Fernandes clash over blame and criticism
Fernandes has been one of the most influential players at Manchester United for years. He is often praised for match-winning performances but just as quickly is critiqued when results go against the club. "I accept scrutiny as part of being at a club like United," the Portuguese star made clear recently.
Speaking on The Diary of a CEO podcast, Fernandes explained that criticism has never bothered him. What frustrated him, however, was what he viewed as inaccurate claims about his intentions on the pitch.
He said: "To be honest, I've always said I don't mind criticism. I always take criticism from anyone and everyone and I never replied to anything whatsoever. People have an opinion, they think it's good, bad or whatever.
What I don't like was when people lie about things and in this case that you said about Roy Keane, basically what he said is a lie. And luckily for me, everything is on record. Imagine if it wasn't? Then people will think like, 'Bruno is the guy who always trying to get the assist [record]."
The remarks quickly attracted attention because they involved Keane, one of the most outspoken figures in football punditry. Rather than issue a lengthy rebuttal, the Irishman delivered a short message on Instagram:
"Too much attention makes a donkey think he's a lion."
That single sentence immediately became a talking point among supporters, with many interpreting it as a subtle shot at Fernandes.
Bruno Fernandes' Manchester United impact continues despite Roy Keane criticism
The timing of the exchange is notable because Fernandes is coming off one of the strongest seasons of his career. The midfielder played a major role in Manchester United's return to the
UEFA Champions League and capped the campaign by setting a new
Premier League record with 21 assists in a single season.
His influence at Old Trafford extends far beyond statistics. Since arriving from Sporting CP in January 2020, Fernandes has transformed into the team's creative heartbeat, contributing 107 goals and 108 assists across all competitions.
Interestingly, the midfielder also revealed how close he came to taking a very different path before joining United. Discussing his career journey, Fernandes admitted Tottenham Hotspur nearly secured his signature before Sporting blocked the move.
He recalled, "Yeah, I spoke with Tottenham, and we were very close to getting an agreement done. Then, in the last two days of the market, Sporting just said, 'We're not going to sell him. We're going to keep him because we need him'.
Obviously, I was lucky enough that my dream club to play in England was Man United, and obviously, Tottenham at the time was the option I had, and I was very, very happy to join them because they showed me the process that they were going through."
For now, the latest chapter in the Keane-Fernandes saga remains a war of words. Yet with both men known for their strong personalities, few would be surprised if the conversation is far from over.
