Though being seeded at No. 10 in the East, the Miami Heat finished the 2025-26 season with more wins than losses. They consequently had to face the Charlotte Hornets in the NBA Play-In Tournament. Miami suffered a heavy defeat, losing 127-126 to Charlotte after LaMelo Ball sank the winning basket with five seconds left on the clock. The Miami Heat, for the first time since 2019, got knocked out in the play-in game against Charlotte. On Monday, Pat Riley, the president of the Miami Heat, gave his annual State of the Team address. Furthermore, he stated that he is neither retiring nor stepping down.

Pat Riley shuts down retirement talk while addressing Miami Heat struggles

It's another early departure for the Heat, and there were rumors that Pat Riley, the team president, might step down. Before taking on the role of full-time team president in 2008, Riley, who turned 81 in March, was the Heat's longtime head coach. Riley maintains that he isn't prepared to retire, though. As per Associated Press, Riley said: “I’m not going to retire. I’m not going to resign. I’m not going to step aside.
… I have the same attitude as I had in that press conference on the Imagination, period. I want another parade down Biscayne Boulevard. It may come. It may not.”Riley added:“I want another parade down Biscayne Boulevard.”If individuals believe that the Heat will fail in the future, Riley said:“We’re always going to try to win. We’re not going to apologize for it. If we’re fighting for the final spot in the play-in, we will fight until our last breath.”
The Heat President expressed his frustration with the team's current situation, stating: “I’m really pissed. I’m disappointed, disgruntled… I’m not going to apologize for being a play-in team.”He went on to say that Miami finished with six more victories than the previous season, demonstrating that they had genuinely improved after dealing Jimmy Butler. The Heat were vying for a postseason berth, they were not going to give up assets before the trade deadline. Riley admitted that star Bam Adebayo was dissatisfied with the Heat's current situation. Riley claimed to have experienced similar annoyance from elite athletes in the past.Overall, Riley said:“We’re just not good enough. We’re not happy with it.”Riley added that the team is able to make roster improvements. In addition to coaching the Miami Heat from 1995 to 2003 and again from 2005 to 2008, Riley has been the team's president since 1995. He has assisted in leading the team to two NBA titles while serving as an executive. In the end, Pat Riley made it clear that stepping away is not an option, even as the Miami Heat face questions after another early exit. While he openly acknowledged the team’s shortcomings and the frustration within the locker room, Riley’s message remained firm, Miami will continue to compete rather than rebuild. With roster adjustments likely on the horizon, the focus now shifts to whether the Heat can turn that urgency into meaningful improvement next season.
