Maniktala Seat Battle: TMC Legacy, BJP Challenge And SIR Row Shape Contest

Maniktala, in north-central Kolkata, reflects the layered political reality of West Bengal’s 2026 election battle. A densely populated constituency with Bengali households, Hindi-speaking migrants, traders and old neighbourhood networks, it has long been a Trinamool Congress stronghold. The legacy of veteran leader Sadhan Pande continues to dominate the political narrative, with his daughter Shreya Pandey now carrying the mantle. TMC is banking heavily on this emotional connect, even as BJP fields veteran Tapas Roy in a bid to make inroads. On the ground, voters speak of loyalty, but also hint at silent anger and possible shifts. Some refuse to speak openly, citing fear. The RG Kar issue surfaces briefly but remains largely unspoken. Adding to the tension is a voter-list controversy, with claims of hundreds of names being deleted, including long-settled Hindi-speaking families. As Mamata Banerjee remains the central face of TMC across all seats, the key question is whether the BJP can convert undercurrents into votes in constituencies like Maniktala.
